Real or fake Daytona

Hello All,

A client of mine gave me a Rolex Daytona today. He was wearing a great looking gold Breitling that I commented on and he opened the desk and handed me the Daytona. My camera will not take great pictures of it. Is there and real way of telling if it’s real? My first thought is that it is not but the best watch I have is a Raymond Weil and I do not know anything about Rolex. I went through several web pages and forums including this one and have done the regular checks. It’s either real or a decent fake.

On the inside of the band near the watch, there is a number 116520. On the back of the case (not the case cover) is a stamped R. I haven’t seen this on any other watch. The watch looks stainless to me but the inside of the clasp says 18K with the number 750 under it.

Sorry if this isn’t enough to go on but that’s the best I can do. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Patrick

Welcome to TRF!

Sorry, but it is a fake.

Only thing that is right is the model number (116520).

Otherwise, many signs tell me it is a fake:
  1. There is NO "R" on the backside of a real Daytona
  2. Your Daytona probably wants to be an 18 kt. white gold Daytona, but then the bezel markings are wrong (no triangle-row), and there should be gold hallmarks on the underside of the lugs, too.
  3. The BEST tell-tale signs are the subsidiary dials: The are all wrong, since on the model 116520 the continously running seconds are situated at SIX o' clock, not NINE! Also, the subsidiary dials are CENTERED on the fake (compared to the hour markers at 3, 6 and 9) and on the original Daytona they are moved up by 7 % towards the 12 o' clock position. Also the subsidiary dials are too close to the 3, 6 and 9 markers (that besides that are TOO square: the real markers are more rounded off).
  4. The Daytona writing has a wrong colour (not the RIGHT red colour)
  5. The chapter ring has a mirror shine to it whereas the original one is satinated
  6. The end links seem to be all polished, not partly matte (sides) and polished (middle). Also not right.
  7. "Skinny Hands" style only on the early Daytonas 116520 (discontinued with the mid F-series where the "Fat Hands" took over).
  8. Wrong dial font
I could go on and on!

Hang around here and you will know what a real one looks like. That dial is all wrong.

So what do I do with such a thing

It keeps time but looks like it was worn by someone much larger then me. Do I toss it or waste the time and effort having it resized?

Stick it under your car tire. Even better if you have a truck.

Thanks for all that

The only thing I noticed was the mirror shine on the chapter ring. I do appreciate all the information.

Patrick, that was the first dead giveaway that it's fake. No one reaches into their drawer hand gives you a $12K-15K watch just because you're a nice guy.

The crown is from a Sub. The fakers like to re-use parts from their other fake lines, so the only crown available with the correct 3 dots is the fake Sub crown.

Make sure his checks clear!

Yes, that is true

And just to make sure:

a REAL Daytona has the Triplock crown with the 3 dots as seen on the Sub Date for example, as well.

Here my SS Daytona:

Fake and if it means anything to you Think of it as a nice gesture to recieve a gift from a friend. YOu dont have to toss it resize it . It is probably better looking than the Raymond Weil watch IMHO.
