To engrave or not to engrave

I was wondering about engraving my 2020 126200. My AD has offered to do it for free. I have never had a watch engraved before due to the possibility of selling it one day. But this watch I do not ever intend on selling. May even pass it down one day.. But is there any pros or cons to having your watch engraved?

Love the idea of engraving. But much like a tattoo, I’ve no idea what I’d get.

Engraving a Rolex case back has been a time honored tradition for dozens of special occasions, or just for personalization, for decades.

Your case back can be replaced with an identical back if needed in the future.

Go for it! As Tools mentioned, you can always have a new clean caseback put on for cheap if you change your mind down the road

Thanks for the replies. I was wanting to, but teetering on the idea. But I am going to do it. I do really love this watch.

You can also have the engraving removed with a refinish if it’s not terribly deep. No need to buy a new one.

I'd say do it.. if you need to sell, buying a replacement caseback isn't that expensive either for you or the new buyer!

No need to decide now.

They will do it later for free.

I’d do it if you really wanted to, not just if they offered. The only watches I have engraved have my sons initials and DOB but I wouldn’t be opposed to more, just haven’t had it done yet.

If your watch is indeed a keeper, you won't regret getting it engraved. Additionally, as others have noted, it's relatively inexpensive to return the watch to stock with a replacement CB.

I was in the USN for 26 years. Never got a tattoo, but my Y serial 16610 Sub has been with me since the day I turned 40 (said watch is my avatar). When I retired I took the watch into my AD and had my name, service, and service dates engraved. As soon as I get to ten posts I'll come back and add a pic.

Do they engrave the caseback on the watch or take it off?

Thinking of having my SD4k engraved as it is earmarked for my son later down the line. It is his birth year (2014) so need to think of something appropriate..

My friend bought a watch with an engraving on the caseback.
AD ordered him a new one for 180usd.

So, engrave it. If you wanna change the caseback down the line its not a big deal.

If been considering this lately. Not set on what I want engraved though.
Go for it if you know what you want it to say.

My thoughts exactly! (However, I probably wouldn’t engrave)

big fan of engraving....

My sub was handed down to me and I plan on having my father's initials at the 12, and mine on the three..it will be up to my son to have his on the 6 when it is his turn....

a replacement case back is cheap if you want to sell...

If I had the chance to buy a model I really wanted, I could not care less it was engraved. Who looks at the case back. Nice to know the watch was a very special piece to someone, not just a flipped asset.
