If it's too good to be true...what's wrong with this Tudor movement
A friend of mine just picked up a Tudor 94110 for the remarkable, unbelievable and incredible price of USD 2.5k locally (i.e. in Dubai). He thought it was a bargain and showed it to me for approval and I immediately noticed something amiss (or at least not too familiar) with the movement pics, specifically the fonts of the Tudor text. The previous owner claimed to have won it at a Japanese auction...
Does anyone know if Tudor ever made snowflakes (94110) with this font on its movement or should he be concerned? I know there are dial variations specifically from 82 (known as Type 2 I believe) and this watch is also dated 82 so who knows... Some pics (not the best, but these are all I got from him) below.

I am not going to go into details, because that helps the fakers.
There is nothing on this watch that is good, this includes the hands, crown, case, insert, bezel, movement, and while dial is not clear enough in photo - there is enough wrong there as well.

As above. It’s completely fake including the movement.

sadly, there are a number of Japanese sellers who flog these fake tudors on the Bay. Dissappointing really.

Cheers, John R

Update:
Thanks to everyone (especially John who really should charge for his service and advice), my friend took it back to the seller and was able to get a full refund. The forums and the collective knowledge of the folk here saves the day once again. Immensely appreciative of all of you pitching in.

I wonder if their is something different in their legal system that allows for it - there are many sellers doing it.

The watch market is particularly robust in Dubai. There are no sellers that don’t check everything against the net and then ask 10% more. If it seems like it’s too good to be true it’s because it is

I agree the watch market is robust (in fact VERY robust) here in Dubai, but there are only a handful of true vintage aficionados here (including some on this forum) and I think we all know each other by now.
One of my BIG challenges with being here is not being able to mingle or interact with those in possession of vintage watches (Rolex or otherwise). You learn a LOT from just studying and/or inspecting actual watches, not just pictures. But most of my newbie mistakes early on were made because I made decisions based on images and not knowing enough beyond what the textbook or forum posts say, which is why true insight related to determining authenticity remains a rare skill in these parts.

I was gifted the EXACT same thing (only in black) by a friend. He paid $1200 and had no idea as well. I mean, all the parts used including the movement stamped 2824 and using that same font/layout on the rotor, are the same.
I told him it was fake after I inspected it and asked a few questions here on TRF. But, I appreciated the gesture and have been using it as a way to learn more about fixing/replacing parts and faux aging techniques. Just for fun. I did notice in your pics they didn’t even bother with a gasket on the case back! I was able to fit one to mine, though it took some effort because it wouldn’t take any standard size lol. I’m actually glad to started this thread because I was considering removing the movement and selling that as I believed it to possibly be a genuine ETA with an aftermarket rotor but now I’m even more skeptical. Sorry your friend learned the hard way :/ Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Here’s some pics. The same members who helped you also helped me. I have since replaced the case back gasket (the one it had broke when I opened it), ghosted the bezel with bleach and a q-tip, and fixed the tension spring for the bi-directional bezel. I’m ordering a tool that pulls apart permanently links and will be testing it first on this bracelet before using it on my Explorer! It’s been a fun little piece for me to learn on :) just glad it didn’t cost me anything! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
