Incoming! First Rolex!!!

I've been eagerly anticipating being able to write this post for quite some time.

2020 coincided with a career achievement I wanted to commemorate, and my interest in watches was just beginning to grow enough to learn that it was near impossible at the time via an AD. I wasn't in enough of a hurry to feel it was worth it to me to go grey, so I waited, kept reading and learning, acquiring a couple other pieces from other brands I was interested in along the way.

After keeping in touch with my local AD since 2020, visiting in person a few times, and never feeling as though I was being taken seriously as someone who could be a future loyal customer, I ventured out to a slightly less local AD about six months ago to introduce myself, express interest in a few pieces, and try my luck with another AD...

A few days ago I went back in to say hello to the new AD, and to let them know I was still interested in the watches I mentioned last time and would keep checking in, expecting it to be a couple of years.

Imagine my surprise when I was presented with the opportunity to walk out the door with a Polar Explorer II, one of the few pieces I expressed interest in, and a watch that one AD told me was at least a couple years wait, and another AD told me would "be a while, as it's about 5x harder to get than the black version." I was absolutely thrilled and have been staring at it on my wrist ever since.

And because I know folks like to keep track of these data points – this was 6 months after visiting this AD for the first time, with zero purchase history, and a random walk-in. (My understanding is someone had just declined their allocation to purchase something else). I'll take the AD at their word and assume I was just incredibly lucky, but hope that this is the beginning of a long term relationship with this AD.

Explaining to my wife that I spent $10k without discussing it first "because I had to seize the opportunity" was an interesting conversation, but I'm pleased to report all is well on that front - though I don't think I'll be buying another watch for a couple years.

Here are a couple wrist pics from this afternoon:

Congratulations! I just recently got my first Rolex purchase from an AD as well after waiting a couple of years. Mine was a DJ41 Blue. The Explorer II looks amazing in white! Hope you enjoy the new addition!

Great story. Well played. It’s nice when our spouses put up with this crazy expensive hobby. Congratulations on a very nice piece.
