Which Sub to Choose?!

Hi gang,

In the market for a submariner to complete my Rolex collection

Current collections:

-Vintage Datejust SS jubilee with slate dial from the 1990s
-GMT Pepsi 16710 on oyster from 2002
-Daytona 116500 Black from 2019
-DD40 RG 40 olive dial from 2024

Looking at two different subs for the next addition:

Vintage 16800 from the mid 1980s
with patina on indices - (this is a matte dial without gold insert around the hour markers)

The other is the new 41 mm SubC with green ceramic MK 2

Two different watches but same price point
Any recommendations is appreciated as I am quite torn on this
I love the vintage proportions and vintage patina but the pop of color from the green ceramic is a charming look

I’d always go with the newer reference when it comes to Submariners

You can't do better than a nice clean 5 digit Sub, SS TT or PM, take your pick.

16800 gets my vote for that more vintage look

I love and would go with the 16800 matte dial. It depends on your wearing habits a bit as well.

I wore my 16750 of that same era for about 16 years, and it’s still durable honestly, but there are situations I wouldn’t wear it where I would a modern reference. You have others in the collection so you can adjust Im sure as needed. The Sub is still a rugged watch, but as they get older you might loose some of that rugged usability where the 126610 may serve better.

I vote 16800, but all really depends on your intent for it.

Yet another opinion:

If vintage try to get your hands on a 1680 red Submariner or go with the latest Submariner reference 124060…

Personally, I would lean towards the latest reference but each to their own!

I would go with the 114060 if you are looking to save a bit or a 124060 as a new or slightly pre-owned watch. The balance of the ND dial is amazing and it is the Submariner. I have owned all of the Submariners over the years and am not interested in five digit or vintage models any longer. I prefer modern, robust watches and refuse to pay a premium for a watch that is not premium, to me. The LV is OK but if you are going with the green then step up to the Hulk.

I would choose 16800 but also 16610 or 14060 or 5513 but never the new 41mm ones

Love the 16800. Given your collection though…I’d go LV. If you already had a diver, I’d go vintage with patina for sure. But if having one sub in the collection, I’d personally have something different than a black dial/bezel sub. No offense to those that love and have this reference, I actually love it too… but this is the most common Rolex I see out in the wild. So I choose to be a bit different, even if it’s only slightly… I currently have SD4K as my Rolex diver choice. If I were adding a submariner as one and only submariner to my collection, it would be an LV, Bluesy, 619, 618, etc.…
