Agree. Even a healthy big law salary of around 300k (i.e., about what a big law associate makes in dc or nyc in their late 20s if no time off before law school) (or doctor, etc) doesn’t give you enough disposable income to drop 30k on a watch. Most of these professionals have student loans as well. If they had parents who paid their loans, they might have more disposable income. Generally, as a young professional in a watch conscious city, I see a good number of SubC, OPs, DJs, but almost no PM pieces on other young professional. (I would say I’ve seen none in 5 years of practicing law and living here).

Yellow or rose gold, in my opinion and expressed to me by others, is too flashy for most client facing industries. That said, I have an IWC Ref. 3209 in platinum. That’s a dress watch that is more subtle than my DJ and cost less than the DJ when I got it used (paid 6k for watch below, now on a brown strap)

I don’t see why young people can’t have a PM Rolex. It is all about budgeting. Yes, I understand everyone is in different financial situations. But like I said in a previous post, I will be purchasing a RG YM on OF that has been my grail watch once I graduate college in the next 7 weeks. I budgeted for it and am making it work. Then again, I cut back nearly all my expenses.

I disagree that a biglaw salary doesn’t give you enough disposable income to drop that much on a watch. I think it’s a question of preference and priorities.

I’m a biglaw associate that took out full student loans, no help from parents, and was comfortably able to acquire a BLNR, SubC LV, AP 15300 and some others, on biglaw salary.. I could’ve easily acquired a gold piece instead of all of these SS ones. The reason I didn’t is mostly because I prefer not to be as flashy, particularly when facing clients. It’s all about your preferences and your priorities.. I don’t have a car, rent is cheaper than NY or DC, and in any case around 300k a year should be enough to get you a gold Rolex if you really want one—just save around 1k a month for 3 years! :)

I have questions as to how a college student can earn enough income to make such a purchase. Barring parents paying for most expenses and/or full scholarship, I don’t see it happening even with a solid college job. Unless someone else is paying all the bills so you can save solely towards watch. If so, it’s easier to save in college when you are on your parents’ health plan and have low expenses (in event of scholarship, student housing). Seeing you’re also from Miami, my guess is your parents’ income isn’t a non-factor in being able to set aside 10k+ for a watch at age 22. If you have an awesome side hustle that paid for it, more power to you.

Agreed that it can be done. But, like you said it’s priorities. I can only justify spending so much while I still have student loans to pay, retirement savings, house down payment, etc. I wasn’t trying to suggest that getting the cash together is impossible, but that it’s tough to do (and rationalize) for most young earners.

True, lots of variables, but watch lovers will always find a way!

I do not have any loans from college and have been modest in spending all throughout. Starting 1st job soon with retirement savings all planned into this purchase.

Might not see them walking around there but spend any time on a commercial fishing boat or an oil boat/platform and you will see a few. Nothing says "Rolex Time" like having 20 or 30K in your pocket and week to spend it some port you never heard of. Especially if they are trying to cut back on the hookers and booze!

I think the Bi Metal models had their day in the 80's and 90's. They are of an age gone by in my opinion. I also don't think most people only go for the SS models because they can't afford the extra for some of the Bi Metals or Gold but its more the fact that most people prefer SS models regardless of price difference. I know I prefer my SS models than Bi Metal models and price is not the deciding factor.

I still prefer the two-tone models. For me, solid yellow gold is too much.

A watch dealer in the North Bay told me that he's getting more clients asking for TT and YG sports models. It could just be that SS sports model prices have been ridiculous for a while.

Its probably the fact that TT and YG models are easier to get as most people are wanting the SS models. I know each time I have popped into AD's to ask about SS models the sales person said waiting list is long he then tried to steer me onto the TT and YG as those models are more available as they are not as popular.

I prefer the dials alone on the PM vs. SS....Didn't work all those hours saving up the dough for someone else's enjoyment.....
