Going full circle... kinda

Some of you may remember or participated in a thread not long ago about being disappointed in a PM purchase.

Well yesterday I think I settled on what I want. Going to box up my beautiful YG submariner and off to Davidsw it goes.

David was on par with everyone else as far as pricing goes. Beat my AD by over three grand.

In a partial exchange for my 116618LN submariner I’m going to snag a 216570 white explorer II. Been a watch I’ve liked for quite awhile even going back to the 16570. This will get me back into something much more casual and much easier to take the dings and scratches.

I think in the future I’d like to get another submariner. I don’t think I’d do a full gold model again, the allure has since faded. Certainly a cool piece and even more cool to have actually owned it. Maybe a bluesy/hulk/sub date LN will fill it’s shoes one day.

Sometimes we get a little jaded by the price of something. Makes you think it’s better for whatever reason. But alas, the yellow gold submariner wasn’t a keeper for me. In fact it was the shortest amount of time I’ve owned a watch.

I figured out of all the reasons I’d sell this was the fact it was yellow gold. Turns out it’s really not that bad to wear. Hardly anyone noticed it. Or made mention of it. The micro scratches do appear very easily. But I think it’s nail in the coffin was I just didn’t “love” it. I like my watches to be worn and enjoyed. I didn’t feel as if I could let this thing brush up against another surface much less an indiscriminate bang on a door frame

The TL:DR

didn’t love YG submariner
Traded it off for a 216570 white explorer II

Remind me. Did you buy the YG Sub new or was it preowned? I hope you didn't take too much of a hit on this trip around the moon.

If you have a piece that you don't love, (or actively dislike), it's best to let it go.

I bought it new. Did receive a discount.

If I include sales tax I’ll be about $6500-7000 in the hole. Sucks, but I’ve learned my lesson there.

But it would be probably the most I’ve lost in 60 days willingly.

Time to move on to a more appreciated enjoyment.

You are doing the right thing.

We’re you at all tempted by a 116500? Seems like it straddles those two worlds nicely.

Congratulations regardless on getting it sorted. I think you’ll really enjoy the 216570. It’s very comfortable for the size, and legibility doesn’t get any better.

Sounds like me. I have spent PM money several times over in my watch past but have never actively sought one. Tying that much money up in one piece is outside my comfort zone and my style just is not gold.
The only PM watch that still catches my eye from time to time is vintage DayDates. 90’s and back they have mostly reached full depreciation and might be something to experiment with some day.

Have you tried the 216570 on your wrist?

My number one rule in watch buying is NEVER to buy a watch that I haven't tried on my wrist multiple times.

I have a feeling you broke that rule on the YG Sub, yes?

It’s a journey and the watch is for the owners personal style so if it didn’t speak to you, I cut it free. Way too much of appeal on social media is put on how much a watch is worth or what it’s resale value is. If you like what you like then you won’t sell it anyway right??

Luckily for me. I’m not a big Daytona fan. I was lucky enough to try on a white dial a month or two back. Not the watch for me. I enjoy a date function.

I actually made long plans for the YG Sub. Tried it on many times. Thought it would be the end all be all watch purchase. While I like yellow gold quite a bit, it wasn’t the love I thought it would be.

I have tried on a 216570 recently. AD had a used one I spent a little time with. Like the size and legibility. I didn’t think it was too large for my 6.5” wrist. A little bigger than every other Rolex I’ve owned. But not unmanageable as some people would make you believe.
