Thoughts on trading a GS for a JLC?
I may shortly have the option of trading my GS Peacock HiBeat 36000 GMT for a JLC Reserve De Marche 37mm in Pink Gold.
Ignoring exchange values as we’ll come to a fair agreement for market values, which watch would you prefer to end up with and why? I’ve been appreciating dress(ier) watches more recently but the Peacock has such a special dial and wouldn’t be easy to replace as there were only 700 made. I’m finding this one a tough choice so any thoughts are very much welcomed! TIA Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Is the GS PM or steel?
Also, If I were considering JLC then their master calendar with a Moonphase or their ultra thin perpetual etc would also be under my lens for sure... good deals to be had preowned. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Do you use it often or is it a safe queen? Do you have a regular need for dress watches? Do they have to be from the Big 3-4-5 whatever? (Many other lower tier brands have great dress pieces) How well is the GS doing in the second hand market? (JLC usually takes a hit and stays relatively flat or a gentle up for PM) And what’s the gap between exchange values for the two pieces. These should help determine your next steps ... While the JLC is lovely, for me it's a no go as don't wear suits or the tux any longer. So the sportier Seiko is the choice for me. Your lifestyle may differ.

In general, I think that Grand Seiko is an outstanding timepiece. Having said that, I think that JLC and GS both fit a really specific niche - they're both incredible watchmakers that are really underappreciated.
While I love GS, I'm not a fan of that particular model (I know - I'm in the minority) so that would sway my decision. Let us know what you end up doing! |

One is a gold dress watch, the other is a SS sporty watch. Impossible to make any meaningful comparisons OP.

i thought my fp journe octasport vs gronefeld principia was an odd vs. id imagine you'd have to add a fair amount of cash. i like jaeger but there's a lot more watches id take for 10-12k. peacock is fairly rare, but at the rate that GS puts out product there's always gonna be something down the road.

When I read your thread title, I immediately knew my answer, or so I thought. I would choose JLC over GS any day. Except, however, for the Peacock, which is my favorite GS ever and the only one I personally covet.
So for me, because I love the Peacock, I wouldn't let it go because it'll be difficult to acquire again if you regret it. Lastly, if I were going to go JLC, it probably wouldn't be that one, as there are many others that I prefer. |

Peacock is one of the most sought after for GS but you should keep the one that sings louder to you.

Both are great watches and the devil is in the details. I like the JLC better for the same or close to the same money. If not, the GS is a great watch and could work in all situations.

Big fan of JLC here but I wouldn’t make the trade. This JLC is fairly standard issue and the GS is one of the most sought after models and impossible to find again once it’s gone.

Tough choice. I think JLC is an underrated brand and they makes awesome watch. I do look at the JLC as a lot more dressy.
Personally I would keep the GS as it would fit my life style more (more dress-casual). And you can't argue with GS's finish.

Agree with everyone saying keep the GS. Fundamentally, the JLC reference you're considering isn't as special as the GS. That said, I generally prefer JLC to GS. Good luck, OP!

Keep the GS and save up for the JLC, and then you've got both.
Problem solved. |

Both GS and JLC are great brands that (when bought right) offer exceptional value for money. Personally I would go for another slightly more iconic JLC model (e.g. Polaris, Reverso or Geophysic Universal Time) but each to their own.

The JLC is a beautiful watch and I love mine. I don’t know much about the GS watches, so hard to compare. My JLC is mostly worn when I think the my watches with SS bracelet won’t go with my attire.
