Why 3131 in Air King but no emphasis on anti magnetism?

I’ll be honest: until yesterday I didn’t even know that AK used anything other than garden variety 3130 and had no clue it shared a movement with the GV. Why is there absolutely zero emphasis on this? Website doesn’t even say how antimagnetic it is (since it lacks GV’s extra shield, I think).

I understand the purpose, as IWC does same for its pilot watches, but not why it isn’t a bigger selling point. In fact this is the one thing that makes the AK’s “Professional” designation (and size) truly understandable.

I'd imagine that it's because the Milgauss is the "anti-magnetic" watch in the lineup. They don't want to step on its metaphorical toes.

Totally get that. But then why bother? 3130 would have fit perfectly well into the case and would have been cheaper. Unless someone wanted a justification for increasing its size…

Actually the Air-King has the faraday cage too. It's the same watch as the Milgauss aside from the dial/hands (and the green crystal on the GV ones, which are all that are still sold).

I assume the lack of emphasis on magnetism is just for marketing reasons. Milgauss = scientisty marketing, Air-King = piloty marketing?

The reality is that the "Professional Models" may have been used by professionals before quartz watches and advanced plastics became available, but nowadays it is just a marketing term for Rolex watches that are a bit "different".

I doubt that nowadays more than a tiny minority of Subs or Sea Dwellers ever go deeper than the bottom of the hotel swimming pool, or that anyone piloting their single engine plane around the world is relying solely on their Sky Dweller. Rolex sponsors Wimbledon but I don't think they still use a Daytona to measure the ball speed.

However, we all want to buy into the history and know that, should the need arise, we're well equipped. It's all part of the fun and knowing that we are keeping traditions alive.

Really?!?! So green glass + orange seconds hand + PCL = $1,850?

And that’s the model the utterly brilliant PhDs are supposed to purchase?!

Ok then…

My other watches have pretty much taken a back seat to my Milgauss recently. Love the buttery smooth simplicity of the 3131.
There is just something about a simple 3 handed Rolex.
