Explorer 1 36 vs datejust 36 size

Hi guys, just took my wife to look at some exhibition only watches :)

She tried on the new two tone explorer 1 36 and a datejust 36

for some reason to me the explorer looked smaller than the datejust

I am wondering whether that impression is just the wonders of color blocking through the two tone or if these watches are actually different sizes

Anyone know or looked into this before?

Yes I am being lazy with google but I love this forum so it is my first place to ask

I've heard the new Explorer is actually closer to 35mm. You'd think the downsizing to "36" but making it closer to 37 would have made more sense.

I have both and the DJ certainly appears a bit larger.

If measured properly (true diameter, case edge to case edge), it’s 36. However it may appear smaller than DJ for two reasons:

1. Dial color, if you compared to non-black that could throw it off.
2. The lugs taper more and are 19mm lug to lug vs the DJ’s 20.

35mm is if you take a bezel-only measurement, which isn't the correct way to measure watch diameter. Typically, the correct measurement is 10:00/4:00 and includes any protruding case as well. This is a great illustration:

I have both and my DJ (w/ smooth bezel on oyster) wears larger than the explorer. I wouldn’t say much larger, but noticeably larger.

I’ve compared them in Tokyo and to me, the Explorer is noticeably smaller.

Which generation is the DJ? If it's a "11" series, then yes, it's a bigger watch. Dial color also matters.

I was offered one a while back but it felt way too smallish.

As far as I can tell, my 124270 36mm Explorer is the same size as my wife's 114200 OP34, white dial.

Most importantly, which did she choose?

I've noted same (as I wear an Explorer and my wife a 114200, but in silver). What I can't quite tell (no calipers) is whether the dials are actually the same size, or the Explorer is a touch larger. The case on the 114200 is definitely bulkier, as they both have 19mm inter-lug width but the OP has thicker lugs. Also less bracelet taper.

Yes the the 124270 is just a little over 35mm. It's size is more like the older 34mm 114200 OP

And the DJ is 37mm actually

The bracelet tapper and the clasp is the big change. It's small - I mean small.

It's perfect for the wife. But compared to the 39mm Explorer it just feels like the clasp is to narrow.

See the linked post above: the bezel is 35 and change, watch is 36. Clasp is a different matter entirely. I’ve come to the conclusion that the decision to narrow to 14 was due in part to wanting removable links and clasp blades common across multiple watches and the 124270 and 124200 share these components.

I don't think the clasp is objectively small in relation to the watch. It is actually 10% (1.5mm) wider than the clasp on the new Omega Speedmaster, a 42mm watch. I think in the land of glidelocks, it's small, but that's just because the glidelocks are behemoths now.

The 34mm OP 114200 bezel was actually 35mm, too.

I’d believe that. It’s a pretty substantial watch for something marketed as 34mm.
