Milgauss Magnetism

As many may be aware CERN was partly responsible for the inspiration at Rolex in developing the Milgauss.

”>

CERN is the European Centre for Nuclear Research in Geneva. It is the worlds largest scientific laboratory situated near Geneva. The Milgauss booklet that accompanied the Milgauss 1019 quoted CERN as saying, “We may say with confidence that these watches appear to us to be eminently suitable for wear in magnetic fields up to 1000 Oersted and their accuracy in these conditions is comparable to that of high quality watches which have not been exposed to magnetic fields.” The average watch will become erratic at around 60 Oersted and cease to function around 100 Oersted. The Milgauss was tested to 5000 Oersted without any residual magnetic effect upon the movement.

On 13 September 2006, CERN powered up the CRM (the worlds largest superconducting solenoid magnet) having it reach full field strength. The magnet generates a field of 4 teslas which is equal to 40,000 gauss with enough stored energy at that level to melt 18 tonnes of gold. The CRM is 16m in diameter and weighs over 12,500 tonnes.
Below is a photo of the CRM almost near completion.

A link to a full size photo (awesome cool A++) with more detail is as follows:

It would be something for Rolex to release a new tool watch of a completely new breed. However until then I guess I will manage to enjoy the past efforts of Rolex in its Milgauss.

Great pic's. Very nice Milgauss. In all my years of collecting I only came across one and it was in poor condition, although the RSC made it like new. It's great to see one so nice and with all the original goodies.

Excellent post and history a rare watch indeed, but for me thats about it.Sorry but the Milgauss look wise does nothing for me,but the history and the small production numbers of this watch makes it collectible.
