What should I be looking out for?

Evening all,

I posted the other day about a reference I’m looking to purchase. A daydate 36 50th anniversary. I think I’ve just about managed to ascertain the price I ‘should’ be paying but now would like to ask how best to check that the watch is authentic.

Nothing making me think it isn’t but just wondered if people had any tips on what to look out for/do when meeting to purchase? It’s from a private seller as opposed to a bricks and mortar store.

Thanks in advance

Does the private seller have the original box and paperwork/warranty that came with the watch? If so, do the serial numbers on the watch and on the paperwork match?

Yes he does. And I presume the serial number will be under 6 o’clock on the rehaut? Thank you for your help

Back then, serial numbers were sequential, right? Does the number provided match where it “should” be?

Also: spare links. Gold is valuable, make sure it comes with those or is priced to reflect their absence.

I don’t know offhand. But there are plenty of searchable lists out there with serial numbers and approximate corresponding years.

If you are buy a watch of this value include a party that will know its real. Too much risk imo if you have to ask these questions. Buy the seller.

Original paperwork has serial number punched into it on top right. This matches the serial number on the service card from Rolex which also has the serial number on it. Is this enough do you think?

It has an original warranty card and a service card with matching serial numbers, that presumably match the serial on the actual timepiece? Yeah, you're not going to get much better than that, other than take it to an RSC.

It’s original paperwork rather than an original card - should it have an actual original card as well with it being a 2007 watch? And yes, it has a service card dated last year with matching serial number. The serial number on the original papers, service card and on the actual watch rehaut all match. Thanks
