it all started with this...

just for fun, what watch started your collection of 'nice' watches

Mine was this TAG purchased 25 years ago, still own and keep it in working order.

Same as yours. I still have it and it's in good condition. I don't have a photo of it.

I think my wallet started to open up with this watch. Unfortunately Tag is no longer a brand I would purchase from again just from a personal experience. They were too big and was not accurate enough for me. And in general I guess my taste in watch have changed too.

Great thread!

I now look back and realize I’ve always been into watches. From my paternal grandpa’s calculator watch and Ironman triathlon, both of which I admired as a kid, to a Timex Weekender and Armitron tonneau case that I used to time the LSAT, I have always liked watches.

But my jump into my passion for watches really started in Dec 2018 when my boss gifted me my DJ41. That piece led me to this forum and other watch sites and now it’s a part of my daily life.

I have since inherited a DD1803 from my maternal grandpa that I cherish, an Oris Diver 65, and a Tudor Chrono, both of which were gifts from my wife.

I still have the Timex, a LIP that was a gift from my maternal grandpa, a Jack Spade that I purchased for $125 that I thought was a real luxury piece, and the aforementioned Armitron. They all remind me of different periods of time in my life and will always be with me.

Icon19 A quartz Tag Hueur bought while in Hong Kong summer 1995

Looked a LOT like this. Picture from the internet.

Paid $400 at one of the MANY watch stores I visited on our trip that year.

Man, time flies

My first "nice" watch was this Omega Planet Ocean 45.5 back in 2005, ref 2200.50.00. I still wear it today.

For me my first “nice” watch was also a Tag. I’ve always loved watches from the time I was a little boy growing up on a farm my great grandfather who died when I was only 3 years old had a coffee can full of old junk watches. A gift from my father a timex snoopy red Barron watch. For high school graduation a Seiko Kinetic. But this Tag for me at the time was really special. I wore it everyday for a decade or more several battery changes later a trip back to the factory for a service. They charged me nearly $500. I expected to get the watch back in a nearly new condition when I received it back all they did was change the battery for $500! I was livid! The AD told me they would send it back to TAG then 2 days later they called and said my watch was ready?? Puzzled I went to collect the piece they took it upon themselves to “polish” the watch, it was ruined beyond any imagination. I made them refund my cash and I promptly sold the piece because I felt it could never be the same. Tag CS was completely un apologetic about it so I swore I would NEVER own one again and I haven’t. I suppose the silver lining is that Tag made me realize how amazing Rolex Omega Breitling Tudor are.

OMG!
I just had my Tag 6000 out yesterday and was doing some work on the bracelet. I remember paying 1850 for it and that was after I haggled for a discount and this was in 1997. I can’t believe this thread just popped up.

Can’t say it started with this, but it was my first Platinum watch…

…and it was reunited with me at Indy

Started with a Breitling Colt 36mm Quartz blue dial. Purchased in Saint Martin in 1999.
Sold it years ago (don’t care for quartz).
