What was the MSRP for a 16233 in 2000?

I just bought a DateJust model 16233 that was made in 2000. I’m just curious as to what it would have cost new when it was originally sold. Is there a chart somewhere that gives the original MSRP by year and model?

Pic for fun.

It’s crazy to think that in July 2000 the average gold price was about $275 per oz, so compared to an MSRP of $5,300, that’s 19 oz of gold!

1 oz of gold today is $1,759, so 19 oz would be $33,421!

And lastly using an inflation calculator, $5,300 in 2000 now would be $9,172.26 today. Consodering these can be had for less than $7,000 now, I’d say there is value in vintage Rolex models! That and just buying the gold then would have been a better bet at the time!

Yep. They even had them new at Costco for about $3,700.

I bought my 16233 in Barcelona in August 2000, and paid 704,000 pesetas, which at that day's rate of exchange came to about $3500. I got a very good deal thanks to a strong dollar.

This seems normal to me. Most pre-owned items cost less than new items. The only exceptions are collectibles, and I don't put a 2000 DJ in that category. Not yet, anyway.

Upon further investigation, the clasp is marked as July of 2001, so its newer than expected!

I am a huge fan of these late run 16233, likely a K serial on this one? What I think is great about these is you still get the vintage charm of the brushed lugs, light bracelet, solid steel clasp (as opposed to the new two tone one for example), but with some more modern features like luminova on the dial (as an original dial, not a service dial). This was my grail for years, until I got one, a k serial, that unfortunately had a replacement bracelet that was damage - which seller took back. Ultimately went with the 116233, but this late run 16233 will always be a classic in my book
