Engraving cashback?

Engrave CASE BACK DOH, autocorrect!

I have just bought an unworn Starbucks Sub (grey market) and am seriously considering getting the case back engraved with my family name. My reasons are to personalise the watch, make it more of a family heirloom and should the watch be stolen there's more of a chance of getting it back.

The only downside I can foresee is a loss of value, more so for my son should he need the money at some stage.

Can anybody give me advice on how much of a value drop there would be, if replacement backs are available and if you have engraved your watch, have you since regreted it?

Case backs are not expensive so quite easy to replace but you are not buying a cup of coffee you have bought a Rolex 126610LV.

No impact on theft / getting it back.

If concerned about value, have original removed, buy replacement for engraving and then you can have it back to 100% original if desired.

Not sure I understand your simile with a cup of coffee?

1. If your kid needs money at some future time a watch will likely be of little help, however, in the future our kids are unlikely to embrace our analog wrist devices.

2. There is no "value-drop" for engraved watches. Anybody concerned can either remove it if it is shallow, or replace the back - they are generic now days.

3, Rolex engraved backs is a time-honored trait to mark many occasions.

Well is not Starbucks a coffee selling franchise that sells coffee in cups or now in plastic cup things.

As Padi noted above, case backs are not expensive. You could just have RSC add one to the next service if you change your mind.

When my daughter graduates college, I will be buying her an engraved OP or DJ. I won't even think twice about "downsides". The engraving will only serve to reenforce how proud I am of her, especially when the time comes that I can't tell her myself.

Just a surname seems a little generic to me, but do what brings contentment.

Engrave it if you want to. It will absolutely add value for your family to the watch. From a financial standpoint, like others said, it is easy and not very expensive to replace. Do it, if it makes you happy.

Engraving a watch is a very special and personal. It is done with no regard to value. If you are worried about a value loss from engraving, it is best not to do it.

Case backs are one of the cheapest and most disposable part of the watch. Do it.

My daughter was a beautiful spirit. Her friends said no one was as caring, or loved like she did. They said everyone should "Love Like Aly". I was wearing my SD43 on 1/31/2023 and set the bezel to 12:35 as the doctor comforted us. Engraving a case back is a personal decision. I'm sharing mine as it was the right thing for me to do.

Who cares and just Go for it. You’re already committed. I had my wife’s hand engraved and it looks great. She loves it. Case backs are relatively cheap compared to the watch itself.

I engraved the cashback on my Sub. I wish I had done this for other watches, as it is a very nice touch and reminds me of event the watch was purchased to represent.

If it's meaningful to you, do it. My first expensive watch was a gift from my father. He engraved the back with my name. It's a Rolex GMT II and about 25 years old now. I don't wear that watch all that much anymore, but it's seen heavy use and wear and tear through the years. I have watches in my collection that are easily 40-50x of that watch in value. However, if I could only save one watch from a fire, the engraved Rolex would be the one I save.
