5168g turndown

I just turned down a 5168 today. I was picking up a watch for my daughter…her first Rolex. I looked at the PP boutique and saw a 5168 in the case where I was offered it if I wanted to take it home today. It’s nice but big and I’ve never liked a strap so instead asked if I could get either a 5726 1/a or a 5740 along with some Rolexes I was interested in. Did I make a mistake?

As general rule I usually don’t turn down a watch that it’s not a doggy that AD offers me. But maybe in your case is different, some AD’s may respect you because of that.

I think it's smart not to buy something, for a lot of money, you are not interested in.

You did the right thing. Not a big fan of WG on rubber and the 5168 is too large for many wrists. But I'd certainly have picked up a 5740 if I had gotten the call before my AD lost Patek.

Was the watch offered at MSRP? I would not buy a watch I do not want. Do you have other Pateks?

Yeah, I’d fly to New York today and pick up tomorrow if it’s available at MSRP

If I didn’t have a 5167 I’d buy it.

I don’t think it would be available to random walk ins. I think it was a matter of circumstance past history and the fact I bought a watch yesterday. So I wouldn’t get into a frenzy’s. I was just wondering if I made a mistake not taking it even though it’s not a watch I was interested in.

IMO only you can define what a "mistake" is since it's your money and relationship with the AD. I personally wouldn't accept a piece I didn't love, especially at the price points we're talking about. But based on the response of the folks here, most would've jumped on it and envy your circumstance.

The real question is how many folks here truly love the 5168g for its intrinsic beauty and function vs simply it's value on the secondary market, and how would those "feelings" change if it were trading at retail or below

I said this on another thread and am biased owning a 67R but the 68G IMO wears big and super flat for most and in white gold is just meh for Me. Smart move in passing and wait for something you really want.

Of course you did the right thing, not even sure why you are asking. Only ever buy what you want.

Is your money. It would be a grave mistake if you part with it over something which you feel ‘compelled’ to purchase and regret it down the road. I have turned down a 5167A when my AD offered to me. It did not affect my relationship. Instead my AD went on to offer me another timepiece several weeks thereafter which i had expressed a very strong interest to acquire.

Exactly so! Insanity to buy a watch you don’t want.

I have a 5168G and love it. But you made a smart decision in my view. If you don’t want the watch, then there’s no point in owning it. Aquanauts in general and the jumbo one in particular are a love/hate watch.

But good to see things easing up, even if for an established customer.

Still cannot believe we live in a world where one would feel bad for deciding not to buy a very expensive watch they do not really want. Amazing to me.

I turned down hot watches that I know I am not going to wear and also don't want to share here since I don't want to start a witchhunt but absolutely you did the right thing. You don't want it / like it and apparenlty also don't want to get blacklisted for flipping so you turn it down. That's the way :)

Definitely not worth buying something you are unsure of in my humble opinion
