Pricing Questions Regarding Older Items
Have a couple questions for folks out there into the older stuff, as I am currently looking for a 16710...and having been away from the hobby for about 6 years or so, going through the prices, availability, and secret handshakes/voodoo/bloodsport AD processes (not relevant to this conversation, but prominent in my studies) has been little confusing.
I understand the new stuff on the second hand market went to insane heights over and after covid and is currently(potentially/maybe/I have no idea) on the downswing. How have these price swings over the last few years affected the second hand market for older stuff? For example, did they rise in tandem with the surge in popularity of the newer releases, and was it tit for tat or relatively minor or even more pronounced? I really can't recall the price in the second hand market for these 6 or 7 years ago. Do you think the price of the older/borderline vintage stuff will ngo down as the market for the newer stuff normalizes, or do the two categories operate somewhat independent of one another? Basically I am doing the "Should I start taking this seriously?" dance, while wondering if there will be more examples to choose from in a year or so at better prices with less pressure to make an immediate decision over a specific piece. Also, how has the surge in popularity for the hobby affected the availability and cost of parts for the older models when maintenance or repairs come up? Thanks! |

After posting, Im on the fence as to whether or not this is a vintage question...not totally sure what the cutoff is, but if these are considered vintage, I guess I feel better about my hairline.
If it is better suited for that subforum I wouldn't be opposed to having it moved over |

Imho the only thing to 'take seriously' is to enjoy your time. Wear and enjoy.

That’s like asking if the stock market will go up or down. The answer is yes.
If you want the watch for the watch’s sake then buy it whenever you’re ready. |

Rising tide lifts all boats. In 2017 I was going to buy a 16610ln from Bob's and the price increased from $5k to $6k overnight for all 16610's on his website. In about 2014 you could get a 16710 from Bob's for $4k.

Given the continued acceleration of currency devaluation, prices will continue to creep up with demand remaining the same. So, number go up, OP. Sure, you’ll see some variation contingent on a number of economic/political/geopolitical factors etc. But generally speaking, the trend is up and to the right. FYI you’re looking at 11.5-13K for a nice minty full-set in todays’ market. Good luck! One of my favourite references.
