Girard Perregaux Traveller 2 4940

In a year when I had to let a car and a couple of watches go this piece was the light at the end of the tunnel.
Sometimes online, watches catch your eye but in real life disappoint. This caught my eye online and captured my attention on my wrist, particularly when I was able to find a rare bracelet.

This is the first version at 38mm of this series (the 2nd 4935 was 40mm) and wears perfectly on my approx 6.5+ wrist. I’ve heard the larger version can feel top heavy and unbalanced.

The functions are usable and clever; mechanical alarm which emits a buzz on the wrist, date and 2nd time zone. This version has beautiful white dial with applied numbers lumed dots, lumed minute and hour hands, and a gorgeous blue seconds hand.

The watch is all dial and appears larger than its 38mm but without being gaudy. The bracelet is a masterpiece of sophistication, comfortable with no sharp edges and in my opinion makes the watch feel far more expensive. Talking of which, it has the overall feel of a very high quality watch, a step above many of the watches that I’ve bought and sold previously.

The movement is A Schild based (apparently a number of nos movements were found, finished by GP and used. This may or may not be true!) Timekeeping is what you’d expect and with hacking seconds makes checking for accuracy easy.

There were a number of dial versions including a more sporty black one with white hands and some gold-cased versions too.

Overall the bargain of the century and one I hope to keep.
