Did I get “the call”?

I was in the AD picking up a Breitling last fall and my wife was deciding between the Datejust 31 YG fluted with olive floral and a bracelet.

I suggested she get the bracelet because she already has the same Datejust with the blue floral motif in steel.

She did not forget about the watch and decided to buy it a couple days later but it was already gone. As such she began the long wait to receive “the call”.

Fast forward to yesterday when I received an email from my SA saying her watch had come in.

Can an email from your SA also be referred to as “the call”?

What gift would be appropriate for my SA?

I'm not sure the email could be much more clear that this watch is meant for your wife, so yes it is the call. There's no rule they have to actually call - I hear from my AD via texts and it's usually just a GIF hinting at the watch I've been waiting for.

I'm not sure what people view as customary for gifts, but I'm friends with my AD so will probably always bring some kind of gift for a new piece but it's easy because I know his interests so I try to find unique items that fit the bill.

Some ADs use email, which I think is a little silly, as some folks get so many junk emails, they barely check their emails. Why not a text, instead? My AD actually calls. Beautiful watch, BTW. Congrats to her. May we see a wrist shot after pick up? A gift isn’t necessary, IMO.

This watch is tough to get in but also not an easy seller.

You should buy yourself a gift to thank yourself for buying it.

That's a lot more solid than the call I got today which didn't tell me anything and just left me wondering.

Lucky bugger. Congratulations.

I will post a wrist shot here when she picks it up.

Oddly when my wife requests a piece directly she will receive a text in most cases.

In this particular case I was already communicating with our SA on an email thread where I had asked if they could get me one of the new Breitling Superocean rainbow dial 42mm. Unfortunately the answer was no as none of their stores carry the brand anymore.

As I was going back and forth in that thread it ended up being that my wife’s watch showed up.

It maybe depends where you’re at. From my AD I think these probably last under a week if they’re not already spoken for as they go through their clients to find a buyer. Since last fall, they had the original one my wife tried on, one that came in with a diamond bezel several months ago (she passed) and now this one. So they’re maybe getting 3 a year or something like that.

Who me?

I was thinking maybe some Läderach Swiss chocolate for the store would be a nice gift!

That would be a very nice gesture, and something I too would probably do.

Others here will not see it that way though and you'll get a grilling for not treating buying a Rolex like buying a newspaper

My opinion, if you’re being sincere, is that would be an act of kindness welcomed by the store .. some think it bonkers, I see nothing wrong with a kind gesture .. take it or leave it ..
great looking watch btw enjoy .. your good lady that is ..

I’d probably reply to the SA’s email and ask him/her to call (and not just text) so you can post about it “correctly”, without ambiguity, on TRF.

Gift wise, I’d probably buy the SA the bracelet your wife was looking at (full circle!) if it was a female. If a male, probably just get him a Rolex.

Otherwise, the chocolates sound nice!

Congrats to your wife! Can’t wait to see a wrist pic!

This made me chuckle lol. I too am a fan of gifts - doesn't have to cost much and can help with the next bucket list time piece you want!

If such acts of kindness extend to the cashier at Home Depot, the produce manager at Krogers, your physician and the lawn guy, then at least you’re consistent.

I, on the other, see no reason to gift a sales clerk simply because they notified you that you can spend tens of thousands of dollars on a product that sells itself.

Herrrrreeee we go!

You buy luxury goods at Home Depot do you? I'll make sure to pick up a Hermes bag at retail next time I pop in to get a tin of paint

My AD rings, emails and txts me. There's no pattern to it. My last Rolex incoming (blue SS Sky Dweller) was an email, rapidly followed by a phone call from me to them! I got a phone call when my BLRO arrived. I've got an Explorer II in for service at the moment which is being handled by TXT.

If you are going to give a gift to the SA, it should be something you feel comfortable handing over and should feel appropriate. If it feels awkward or forced, it is. We give small gifts to retailers we know well and get on with. You do you.

Out of all the people the SA could have possibly sold the watch to, it was the OP and his wife that came in to their mind. That has to count for something. People aren't talking about gifting the SA a new car. Just a little something to show their appreciation. Small courtesies like that seem to have been forgotten about in this day and age.

I think a gift is a show of appreciation. I wish this wasn't met with such disdain on the forum. I love to give a good tip and I love a good gift for someone who I enjoy working with. What is hard is coming up with things to give an AD. I like the fancy chocolate suggestion above.

No gift needed IMO. Certainly could not fault someone for giving one though.

It is a real incoming post but I wrote it to mimic the typical front page posts in the forum here and then threw in an extra bonus hot topic like AD gifts for a little bit extra!

Steak dinner followed by offering your SA some sexy time seems a good idea.

Alternatively you could gift him/her the Breitling as it's basically worth 20% and hence almost worthless, maybe it could be considered Indian giving?

I wish mine hadn’t as she already has the blue dial steel version. It is a banger though! Hard to fault anything with the President bracelet.

I suppose the best gift would either be a wad of cash, or a plastic card with your name on it that will promptly be returned to you.

Congrats on the incoming? Beautiful looking watch.
