interesting article

https://robbreport.com/style/watch-c...le-1235706195/

It talks about the Daytona but the author makes an interesting point on CPO program...what are your thoughts?

I don't know if I'm gonna read from someone who didn't know Daytona is hard to get. Living under a rock comes to mind. But to be fair, sounds to me like the author isn't a watch person and just learned about something everyone here already knows.

"Buying a New Rolex Daytona Is Now Almost Impossible."

SS, at retail, colloquialisms accepted: yup.

An entire article in a headline is good journalism. Kudos to author for not eliciting even the slightest click-bait curiosity by moving that, "Is," six places left with, "Is buying a New Rolex Daytona Now Almost Impossible?"

Granted, you can be a watch person and still not pay attention to Daytonas.

There are many individuals, across all economic and social classes, who do not care for watches and have no idea that a Daytona is hard to get. Hell, my father had no idea people liked Nautiluses and unknowingly asked a Patek AD for a 5990 after looking through the catalog.

this is a good article. Rolex's strategy is not clear to me but what he says about CPO program seems plausible.

In 2010 a White Dialed 116520 was virtually impossible too.

The article is OK - but really a rehash.

True. But those people aren't writers for a luxury good magazine.

The first 3/4 of the article is mostly nothing new for those of us on this forum, though it’s pretty interesting to hear that one AD gets 50 to 100 inquires per DAY about Daytonas. Seems a little hard to believe.

The end of the article provides an interesting thought tho: “Ferrari makes more money from certified pre-owned models than new ones, so perhaps Rolex feels it is a great revenue source or, at least, can help their authorized retailers make more money.”

Is Rolex is indeed trying to drive more revenue through CPO and it’s enough to offset new production, why not?

Of course that's their strategy. CPO is clearly not offered for the benefit of their customers.

I guess I'm lucky, I'm a Rolex guy but have never cared for the Daytona model. :)

Thank God I can check the disappointment of never getting one from an AD off my list!

In 1990 you could not walk in and buy a 16520 from an AD.
And it sold Grey market for a premium.
