Beaten up old 1680.. Worth it?

Hi all,

So i'm looking around for 1680 from 1980. Want it to be 1980 cos its birth year. I am not too worried about condition and I actually like Subs that have seen some action. I wouldn't want a NOS one.

This is available on Watchfinder. Its £9000 and change. What do you guys think? To me its obviously been well used, polished. I can see gaps between the lugs and end links on the right. Any other massive flaws?

You can do better - go find 20 watches from your birth year and then narrow it down to the one that best suits you……

The filthy lume on the markers would drive me crazy. I’d say spend a little more for a better example. These are expensive watches, and it sounds like it’s going to be something you want to be proud of. Don’t cheap-out on it.

Looks legit as far as I can tell from those photos, but nothing about it excites me at that price. But if you like it, buy it.

In the UK there's only 5 steel 1980 Rolexes according to Chrono24.

One 16800 (I dont really like these), two overpriced GMTs, one absurdly priced Sea Dweller and a 22 grand 5513 with photoshopped pics. 1980 it seems was a fallow year!

I don’t like it.

The serial number year match up is a bit of a sketchy concept but if it has to be Rolex from 1980 in the uk then I’d encourage you to wait.

Alternatively you could think about a snowflake

Although this isn’t the best either.

My good man - It just so happens that my 1979 Rolex Day Date 36 mm was actually made in 1978 AND then purchased in 1980…
There’s other resources than C24 - Also, you may be well advised to come to New York City for a trip and see tens of thousands of watches on 47th Street (Diamond District) that are not listed on C24 - you just might find what you’re looking for……

Perhaps stretch your birth year idea to approximate serial number range. This would give you more options. You may be well served looking abroad as some currencies are weaker against pound and the addition of tax and vat may not be much more overall and you might find a better option.

If you are willing to travel, Japan has a few of these watches for sale. I’m living in Thailand and there’s one currently listing for about GBP7,000 in a nicer condition.

Thanks all,

Yeah I go to New York alot and the diamond district always has some good options, unfortunately Japan is out of my range and I dont head over East very often.

Agree with you all on this piece though, its just not worth the price.
