Is this place over charging me for a repair?
Hey guys,
My girlfriend left the crown loose and got some water in her women’s datejust. This local watch store with a good reputation is quoting me $950 for a service including a main spring and reversing wheel. Her crystal has light scratches on it. A new crystal is $130. Do these numbers seem fair? Just want to make sure I’m not over paying. Otherwise, is there someone in NY you guys can recommend? |

Leaving the crown loose will not let water into the watch if the seals are sound.
If this did happen, then it is likely that the watch has gone far longer without a proper service than it should have. Mainspring should be part of the service, but a reverser wheel would not be. The price is at the high end, but not unheard of. If you are in NY, why not use the Rolex Service Center. Likely a similar price but parts are included - except the crystal.

AD / RSC full service would be $800. A crystal would be $135. If the crown is replaced, it would be $48 / $120 depending on if it's steel or gold.

Why do you believe the watch needs service?
Is it not working? Is it keeping time? How old is it? How long since last service? If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

Two things that would be a concern for water entering the movement with an open crown:
1. If the water is pressurized. 2. If the rubber gaskets are old. If you actually see water under the crystal the watch will need a complete service. Completely stripped down. |

It was running, but I haven't worn it for a couple of months. Went to wind it; I can hear it winding, but it then doesn't run. (I found an RSC a couple of miles from my house, so no need to hunt for someone to repair it) Thanks. |

One of the RSC tasks to be done is: Replace fitting links
What are “fitting links”? |
