Something tells me he wanted to strike up a conversation with you and it's all he could come up with to sound like he's someone special. But as someone from Spring, TX, very familiar with the Woodlands, he could've just been being a douche.

It comes and goes. There times when people LOVE Rolex and want to tell you about theirs and how they really want to get one some day. Then there are other time periods where people will tell you that its too flashy, not worth the money all that. Right now seems to be the time period where people are feeling the screw Rolex hype. I have heard it more than a few times from people that go Omega, Tag, Tudor (this doesnt make sense to me), or Breitling. Oh well I just see it the same as iPhone vs Android debate.

I know we all like to rise above it, but at a certain point, there’s nothing wrong with bullies getting some push-back from time to time. I think that’s a major appeal of “Curb Your Enthusiasm”: Larry pokes back. The Audi comment was perfect, as it was basically symmetrical to the original comment. No offense intended, no offense taken, right? |

sorry to hear about the experience. Rolex community is imo very diverse, you get both collectors and posers wearing the same models. I am guilty of grouping up wearers to various levels of horological passion according to which rolex model they wear as well.
I tried going into a watch-talk with rolex wearers and some are just flat in what they know and conversation has to end prematurely whenever that happens. I used to own a pam and during its heydays, you can start a conversation on what they are wearing and it likely ends up with a warm handshake or a pat on the back of sorts.. but i dont really get such with rolex wearers unfortunately. |

GOAT, only a total dumb ^&*%$ would get a Bentley (or Maserati) knowing the massive defects and ongoing problematic costs to keep them going. So, about the excellent Mazda CX-50, when is delivery? ;) Again, i kid i kid, the Genesis is a very fine vehicle.

I'm sure a comment like that would catch me off guard but I'm sure to ask him why he's so concerned about what I'm wearing. He has no idea if it was a gift, or if it's my grail, or if it's one of many in my collection. Definitely wouldn't waste my time explaining my position, seems like a real creep.

Here is where I disagree. 1) it has nothing to do with a bruised ego like you keep insinuating. 2) There is nothing morally wrong with responding in kind. Nothing at all. Highly successful people often have sharp tongues and clever responses. By the way, it’s noteworthy that you’re not following your own advice. Bruised ego? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

He may be trying to say sometimes you have to pick your battles. Because arguing with idiots is more of an intelligence test for yourself in how much effort is it really worth expending. I am all for throwing down if the situation calls for it but this isn’t it. IMO.

I suppose it’s up to the individual as we all respond differently to external inputs. I know for me in this case, I would’ve tried to ignore it. More often than not, people as described in the OP, are attention seekers or maybe just unhappy. Either way, they aren’t worth expending a lot of effort IMO. |

But I did want to take the opportunity to recommend that book. It is really good. It actually has quite a few examples in there of how people became highly successful in their fields by ignoring their ego I am a work in progress myself. I still get frustrated sometimes when people cut me off in traffic for example, but I’ve become much better at just letting it go

Yes. I might give that book a shot. I often go out with a bunch of alpha males. Rough crowd. Everything is fare game and there is no shortage of opportunities to practice good come back lines. I have just learned to dish it out with the best of them. Of course, in a professional environment, I’d never behave that way. But maybe that’s where I get my perspective from.
