Rolex exhibition models

Here is something that I do not understand. I have visited several Rolex stores, and the majority have had several of the exact same models i.e. 2-3 submariners, and even the new Beuce Wayne's with the jubilee! What's up with that?

Depending on the AD’s tier level they have to maintain a specific number of exhibition pieces. If they suddenly decide to sell one of those pieces, they must replace it with another watch. I suspect sometimes this results in doubles.

I’m being told that the exhibition pieces are sold every two weeks and are being replaced with the same model.

I also noticed that, it’s not the same models all the time and either the pieces are already sold and waiting to be picked up by customers or they sell them as needed to make a bundle. The models on display change, so they are being sold to someone.

I have seen almost no rotation in my AD. I would imagine closer to the time new watches come out, these would start getting sold.

Ben Bridge in Anchorage has a 36mm DJ with the champagne fluted motif dial as an exhibition piece. That makes as much sense as Elton John looking at a Hustler.

When I was traveling through Rome Airport a couple of weeks ago, the SA at the Rolex Boutique must have taking a liking to me as all models on display were exhibition. After about 10 minutes of small talk and she saw me loving the 126718GRNR she said that she would make a call to her superior and see if we can work out a deal for this watch. I was not ready to pull the trigger for many reasons, such as traveling with this new addition, unloading a watch to make space for it and also the fact that I told my wife I would be going for a stroll around the airport while we wait for our connecting flight! It would have been cute showing up with a 60k watch(CAD) after a little stroll.
Anyway, it was not available and available

I am told they are sold quickly now and are replaced with models to keep the Exhibition Case stays representative of the line.

Last time I was in the Bahamas the AD had 5 identical two tone submariners for exhibition and wouldn't sell any of them

That’s probably because they had already been allocated to others. Every exhibition piece is sold after being on display for a period of time. My Wimbledon was a display piece. It had been on display for several months. So, the very watch I fell in love with is on my wrist. They leave them fully stickered until sold.

When I bought my Explorer I 40mm in Barcelona last month, it was an exhibition piece, at first I was told that the watch is already sold but it did not sound like a definite answer. I went back 2 days later, and the SA sold me the watch after talking to someone in the management by phone.

Things seems to loosening up. I picked up an "exhibition" piece that was on display for less than 2 weeks in the case. It was a GMT Pepsi, which was totally unexpected, but sincerely appreciated.

At least the AD I have dealt with the exhibition models ( less popular models like DJ) can be sold if they wanted to.

I've been told by a few ADs that they hold display only models for 12-18 months. For me, this made sense as I was offered a two tone (SS/YG Black Dial) 116XXX Daytona that was sitting in the case for about a year after the 126XXX was released.

18 months!!? How does that affect the warranty / first service period?

I wouldn't be surprised if you stop in a few times and ask nicely when no one is near you, that they might sell you one.

It wouldn’t. Warranty starts when they activate the warranty card.

It may well be now that most new stock first enters the Exhibition Case before it is sold, unless there are duplicates. I have seen lately that some watches in the EC case are actually available for sale if you ask.
