Thoughts on Patek Philippe Ellipse

What do you think of the Ellipse model?
I've been interested for a few years but haven't made a purchase yet. I find it very elegant.

The prices of vintage models have increased significantly over the past year and they are selling out quite quickly for the past few months...

The marketing campaigns of the time were very daring for Patek Philippe and the pricing was always much higher then Cartier Tank or Nautilus.

I recently learned that Patek Philippe Chief Creative Officer Jean Daniel Rubelli was responsible for the creation of the Ellipse and Nautilus range.

Patek Philippe have recently made a whole collection of rare handcrafts on the Ellipse, probably to highlight this range.

Yes, really nice elegant dress watch if you have a desire for a dress watch. Easily available as well.

i think the vintage Ellipse watches are stunning and great value! I've seen some going for less than USD 10k (watch only)

Great value in vintage compared to current retail prices.
Jumbo size 3738 is closer to 20K since a few months though...

I like the watch but it would need to be part of a larger collection for me. I like the bracelet version for that 70's cool vibe.

My favorite Ellipse is 3738J blue as in the pic above but I will continue to admire from afar as it wouldn't get nearly enough wear.

10 years ago I thought it was a watch my grandpa would wear. Somehow now I really like it. My wife wears the strap 5738 rose one. I particularly like the rare handcrafts with it, the shape lends itself well to the enameling.

thought that the 5738/1R was beautiful when I saw it in the metal, specially the bracelet construction is impressive. But not for everybody I assume... the clasp closure mechanism and allure reminds me of a vintage watch of the 70's, either you like it or you feel that it's "too vintage" for you.

Love the Elipse. Slim, elegant, the only timepiece I feel you can get away with wearing with a tux. A design icon with the golden ratio.



It's actually the oldest continuous running model in Patek's line-up and actually the first collaboration between Patek and Gerald Genta

My AD says it's becoming a really hot watch again like in the old days. It's not for me - specially being a 6'4 guy.

But he also said it's the best way into Patek if you are new.

it's a beautiful watch, I have the exact model you posted & it looks stunning on in the sun.
It is stunning at all other times too, but especially in the sun.
being 31mm wide x 35+mm lug to lug it is a proper man's watch, but if you like huge modern watches it may not be for you.
It is beautifully thin for an auto, being the Cal 240 was the slimmest auto movement for many years & is still respected hugely today.
I own an Omega Ploprof 600 & a 48mm Breitling Chronomatic & I can still happily wear the Ellipse, when I wear a suit.
It also looks great with jeans & a tee.
it's all a matter of personal taste & as mentioned above ELEGANT it very much is.
