Guilty About Watch Spending?

Hello everyone,

Does anyone else ever feel guilty about how much they spend on wristwatches? I have a modest collection (BLNR, Daytona and Cermit) that I can comfortably afford, but sometimes I find myself feeling guilty for spending so much on them.

Is this just me, or does anyone else experience this catholic guilt?

Not really. Other than eating out and watches, I don’t have any real expenses. It’s a fun hobby and a good way to meet interesting people.

If buying and owning watches is your passion and you can afford that passion then why beat yourself up about it. You can look at it as a hobby that gives lots of pleasure and enjoyment

No, but I feel guilty for eating a large cherry vanilla sundae that I bought last evening from a Mr. Smoothie truck. It was excessive and unnecessary.

But seriously, my watch collection is relatively cheap compared to everything else we have in life.

I wouldn’t say it’s a sense of guilt, but my Mennonite sensibilities were thrown out the window a loooong time ago

I don’t feel guilty, no. If I think about what I’ve lost in depreciation and spent on servicing over the years of ownership, even my daily cup of coffee or weekly bottle of wine would work out to be considerably more expensive. And don’t start me on cars…

I’m not saying watches are cheap but if you keep them long term and buy sensible models at sensible prices, the net cost per day is good value compared with most things in life. Plus, unlike most things, they can be enjoyed all day every day for decades.

If you can acquire them comfortably without putting a burden on your finances or responsibilities, then it's all good.
We all have hobbies. Some more expensive than others.

Zero guilt. I worked extremely hard to get where I am in life. I struggled with highs and lows and if I can afford the spoils of efforts that got me to my station in life....brings a huge smile to my face every time I look down at my wrist and reminds me of that effort.

Guilt is learned behavior that no one has until we are taught it, see it and choose to adopt it. It is probably easy to determine where your guilt comes from and just as easy to set it aside should you choose. I have no guilt for buying the watches I have. Why should I? I paid for each one, enjoy the wear and I am not hurting myself or others. Let it go, it is amazing once you do.

I mean, if you chose a watch over taking your kids to Disneyland, you probably can feel some guilt, but if your watch purchase didn’t impact negatively anyone you love or put you in a debt, then no point to feel guilty.
Especially if you are into Rolexes that you can resell any time with minimal financial losses (depending on the model of course).

That would be a legitimate reason. If the cost of your watches is disproportionate to your net income and wealth, and you’re prioritizing yourself over your wife and kids, then you should feel guilty. Very very guilty.

Guilt in the context of personal passion is a complex emotion affected by childhood upbringing, taught behavior on sharing, self worth, general relationship with money and if not used properly can be destructive. Only you can answer those but if reflected upon properly can lead to growth.

In short - allow yourself to feel happiness from monetary things because after a while even these pleasures will not move your passion needles so to say

when you think of all the things you can purchase for the price of a MSRP Rolex or Grey market it does make you wonder, but as others have said most hobbies are expensive. Heck I have spent a lot more on audiophile stereo equipment than watches, at least with watches you can get a good return if you sale, while stereo equipment depreciates drastically in a years time

But still he’s, because I do t sell anything to realize a profit.

I have traded watches but only for other watches. The addiction continues

absolutely not. i only feel guilt when i do something wrong/bad, that i shouldn't have.

I would say we should all forgo a watch purchase and donate that money to feed people....but then I realized humans all suck and we should just take care of animals. So my recommendation is to feed/help animals and buy watches.

Nope, I don't have any other toys other than golf clubs. I don't miss the money.

Sometimes when I send off a bunch of money for a watch nobody needs and have a bit of buyers remorse or maybe guilt but then it shows up and that always goes away!

I did once, when I bought my Pepsi grey... so much so it tainted my enjoyment of the watch and it eventually went.

i prefer to having animals being used to feed me. preferably cows, chickens and fish.
