Rolex RSC & 18238 DD question

Good evening everyone.

I'm thinking of sending out my 18238 Day-Date to RSC Dallas since everyone has been having really good feedback with them and have a question about those who have a 18238 and have had RSC polish their watch.

My concern and question is would RSC over polish the coronoet on the clasp to the fact that it would look like some of those earlier 1803/18238 clasps that are flattened? Would it be dumb to ask if they can polish everything else except the coronet? So far my 1992 18238 has never been polished and I purchased it because it's never been touched (polished or serviced) and would like to have the coronet intact as much as possible.

Anyone with a 18238 that's had their watch serviced / polished at RSC before and have feedback would greatly be appreciated.

If anything, I would send the watch out to RSC and decline a polish and send it over to Rolliworks who's in my area, but if I let RSC do everything all at once, would they butcher the polish job?

Since you purchased the watch unpolished, I would keep it that way. RSC will also polish the bezel which will be very noticable imo. I do not believe you can request specifics regarding polishing in that is all or nothing with them.

Personally I dropped off my 118238 to Dallas service center last year and requested them not to polish the watch. I saved $100 and the watch came back still unpolished. It had quite a few more scratches than before it was sent in, but at least it remained unpolished, which to me is the more desirable option.

Keeping it unpolished and then choosing, if you'd like, to send to rolliworks for polish, or just sending to rolliworks instead, are better options to me than to send to RSC and let them polish it. Good luck with your decision.

Yes possibly they mess up the clasp. So easy to loose the fine definition of the crown on the clasp. I’ve seen plenty watches with very soft crowns which looks terrible.
Tape it off and add a written request to not touch the crown on the clasp.
But you’ll never sure with Rolex if they honor it.

I believe Rolliworks is more customer satisfaction orientated and they can also do the service btw and no need for the RSC at all. That might be the safest bet.

Gold is so soft, I’d be very hesitant to have it polished at all.

Thanks everyone for your feedback.

I’m hesitant to have it polished and although I do like the unpolished look, I would also love to see this looking brand new-ish, even knowing the risks of what can happen to the gold after polishing.

I believe I will send it to Rolliworks so he can try and meet more of my expectations than RSC will.

Anyone with a 18238 that either have sent it to Rolliworks or RSC and doing the polish job have any photos so I can see if I take the plunge at having it polished or leaving it as i?

Have a great Monday everyone

Mine has been expertly polished a few years ago by a highly respected local watchmaker (not RSC) in my country.
I asked them at the time not to touch the bezel and the clasp.
The slightly softened fluted bezel is from wearing it.
There is no way you can tell this watch has been polished.

You can achieve very good results by doing it yourself and using sunshine cloth.
Fellow member Mystro is the expert and his watches look better than new.
If you do a search you will find plenty tips and tricks

Since that 18238 has been spared from any watchmaker's caseback opener, servicing, and polishing wheel, I would guess it shouldn't be polished.

The coronet is a false binary choice.

The case and the bracelet would show any poor polishing processes no matter what the coronet on the hidden clasp showed.

Off to Rolliworks and let them service the watch also. They will do just as you request.

If it’s unpolished there’s really no reason to polish it. They will clean it in an ultrasonic cleaner that will make it shine even without the polish.
