Jay Leno arrives!
I’ve just taken delivery of the 5980/60G! I was originally on the list for either the 5980R, 5980/1R or the 5980 AR for like 3 years. Basically I had my heart set on any 5980 that was being produced. Then in February they were all discontinued, at which point my heart sank.
My choices then shrank to the 5712/1R or the 5990/1R, until the Jay Leno was announced. After being passed over for the 5712, my AD finally got the green light to offer either the 5990 or the 5980/60G to me. An enviable position to have to choose between these two. My choice boiled down to how I was going to wear the watch. The 5990 has such gravitas with the full bracelet. Its presence is immense, and it would own any room it’s in… it’s a heavy piece. In my eyes, I didn’t feel that I could wear this piece daily, its got just that little extra heft in both size and weight to put it over the top. Plus it’s a heat seeker in public. After seeing the 5980 in person, my initial “yuck” reaction vanished. Trust that Patek know what they are doing. I have a feeling that this will be a limited run piece / Color palette. Could this be the swan song for the reference? Regardless, I love the casualness of the piece. It doesn’t take itself too seriously, it’s more comfortable being on a strap, and that Color is indeed special. Which would you have chosen?… |

Congrats to you! It’s a lovely watch.
Since you asked, would have chosen the 5990/1R. But the differences between the two are more based on personal preference than anything significant. Surprised you were being passed over for the 5712/1R, I would think that is an easier (relative) compared to the 5990/1R. |

I guess I'll be the one to ask, what in the world is a Jay Leno?

Congrats!
Since you asked, I like the dial color of 5980G but Nautilus on a strap are not for me and not a fan of the jeans style straps. IMO the 5968 are the best Patek sports chronos for those who can do the size. |

I like the fact that it looks less showy. My 5811 is unavoidably recognisable which puts me off wearing it in town despite it being really great to wear, suitably thin yet with a heft on the wrist.
Great choice! |

I was actually expecting a 5270 2nd series but was pleasantly surprised.
Congrats |

Congrats. Question, does anyone actually call it the Jay Leno?

Nice watch, congrats!
Not sure it's a compliment to call it the "Jay Leno" though.... |
