A Question for Aussie Members: Swapping a TrueDome D38 Crystal on My GMT 1675

Question: Can any Australia-based members recommend a trusted independent watchmaker that would be willing to swap a TrueDome D38 crystal onto my GMT 1675?

I have been to four independent watchmakers in the relatively small city where I reside and all have refused to do this work for me. Answers to this request have included:

- "It's not a genuine Rolex part."
- "I don't know if it will fit."
- This watch should have a cyclops on the crystal."

Having exhausted local options, I'm now looking to ship the watch somewhere within Australia to a trusted watchmaker who is willing to do the work.

Any recommendations would be gratefully received. Thanks!

Thanks. I'll get in touch with them. I assume you've used them before?

No ... it's not , to do it properly the glass should be machined to be the right fit to the glass lip and to the glass retaining ring ....then pressure tested afterwards . You wouldn't believe how many people fracture their 'easy to fit ' glass at home .

In Victoria , michael woods would probably sort it out for you without a drama . He's the ex head of Rolex Australia servicing , a vintage collector himself and a nice fella .

It might be easy if you have a proper crystal retaining ring press.

Additionally, crystals have been known to crack if not properly installed. I would recommend that you have any crystal installed by someone that knows how to install one - preferably a competent watchmaker.

I won't be doing it myself. I'll look into Michael Woods as another option. Thanks for the recommendation!

This, for sure. All it needs is a fine hairline crack in the crystal to cause water-damaged dial.
