5513 lume/pip ?

I'm searching for a late 5513 84-89 ish WGS gloss dial tritium. I seem to have come across a few that look like the picture. Is it common that the lume plots are different in color compared to the hands and pip ? Or should I assume they were replaced during a service ?

Thanks Chris

Late 80's you commonly see the hands much lighter than the dial. Pip I am unsure, many have been replaced.

Did you ask the seller if the hands and pip glow in the dark?

No, but I'm going to ask or test it myself next week. If they glow green then we will know , that the original items have been replaced.

The dial displayed is an early glossy dial for the Submariner 5513. The later glossy dials had a different style coronet on the dial.

Interesting, I didn't know that. The watch is with box and papers from 1987. Huuummm

Here you go. Notice the later style coronet on this circa 1988 Submariner 5513.

Thank you, yes big difference. Both have WGS and tritium, if Iirc this combination started in 1984 and ended in 1989. Again thanks for pointed this out. Chris

You'll find the 5513 up until 1991 - as late as the L serial number.

Old Expat has a nice example also that he posts here in the Vintage Forum from time-to-time.

Indeed it does. It was a very nice 5513. The 5513 with the gold surround markers are one of my favorites. I've had a few in my day, and, as I age, I've sold most of them except for a very nice, original set from 1990.

Great information, thanks for the education. So when do you think they went from small to the large crown ? Early 80's ?

I'd say maybe three years after the introduction of the glossy dials.

Try googling 5513 by serial number prefix and see what you come up with.

Also, early 5513s from the 1980s had matte dials.

Well, I own it. Turns out it's a 8.7 mil. So 85 ish so maybe the small crown was appropriate for the year.

Under black light the pip glows green for maybe 30 seconds. The hands don't glow , but are definitely more white than patina like the markers.

The acrylic crystal is amazing, all in all I'm happy with it.
