Picked Up An Oysterquartz 17013

Finally did something I have been wanting to do for what seems like forever I picked up a mint 17013 Oysterquartz. First impressions are it is built like a tank and almost as heavy as one of my five digit day dates. Very solidly constructed. I like the audible ticking noise and the fact that it is an extremely over engineered watch that is a piece of horological significance and history. It’s headed off for full service and I have confirmed that all the parts are still available and will report back here when it is done and the costs etc. There seems to be a lot of myths out there with service availability for these etc.

Congrats! That's a fine specimen - I know you'll love it.

I got my first one forty years ago for graduation. I remember the links were so tight it pulled arm hairs out! I've had batteries and case back gaskets done for free at my local ADs every 3-4 years. It had 1 full service about 12 years ago.

The 38mm 28500 family and 34mm 28400 family 'Royal' auto is vaguely similar, as are older quartz 91514 and going back a long way the very pricey at time, Quartz 9130 and 9140 'integrales' are a nod to these.

Indeed, the latter two from 74 onwards some say were inspiring some 70's Rolex Quartz pieces.

Update

Watch is getting:

New circuit board $700
Movement overhaul $600
Miscellaneous parts $100

Not too bad as I knew the circuit board and motor are expensive parts if needed. I believe the new circuit boards are slightly different than the originals (70’s and 80’s) and allow for better adjustment.

That seems like very reasonable pricing to me.

So I got the Oysterquartz back a few days ago. Total service cost was just over $1600 which included a full movement service, new circuit board, new crystal and a few misc parts. I kept dial, hands, and original crown on the watch. It’s an unpolished from 1979 so I wanted to keep it as original as possible. The new crystal has the anti reflective coating and it really makes the dial pop and you can definitely read the date easier as well. Rolex will still service these and they still have parts. How long this will last who knows but if you have one I suggest sending it in for service and yes if it needs the ‘motor’ or circuit board it can be expensive. I know not everyone likes these and they can be controversial and polarizing among Rolex community but I happen to like them. This is also one of the most solidly constructed watches I have owned. Built very very well.

I own a 17000 and 17013 so say the as an Oysterquartz owner, I think the Omega Megaquartz 2.4 MHz cal 1510/1511 is probably a more sophisticated movement and the Seiko twin quartz from the early 1970's are certainly more accurate
