Trade advice: Rolex Hulk/Pepsi for full gold Rootbeer GMT [126715CHNR]?

Hi All,

I hope everyone is having a nice weekend.

I’m seeking some perspectives on a potential Rolex <-> Rolex trade that I’m considering.

I’m considering adding a precious metal Rolex to my collection as a 50th birthday milestone next year. My collection consists of mainly sport models from AP, Rolex, IWC and Panerai.

I’m looking at a Rolex GMT-Master II Rootbeer 126715CHNR and I’m considering the following trade options. I would be going the preowned route given the significant discounts with this option at current market rates.

Option 1: Part exchange a Rolex Hulk [116610LV] with cash
Option 2: Part exchange a Rolex Pepsi [126710BLRO on Oyster] with cash
Option 3: Part exchange the Hulk & Pepsi with a small amount of cash

I’m currently leaning towards option 2 as that probably makes most “sense” (if such a thing exists in this crazy hobby 😊) as it’s essentially trading a steel GMT for a precious metal version of the same watch.

I’m also toying with the idea of option 3 as this reduces the potential cash outlay significantly, however I’m equally on the fence with this one as I’m not sure such a trade is worth it and I’d like to keep at least one stainless steel Rolex in the collection.

I’d obviously like to keep all my pieces but something needs to go to part fund the Rootbeer should I decide to pull the trigger.

I’d welcome anyone’s thoughts on this 1st world problem of mine 😊 and in particular from anyone who perhaps considered or indeed went a similar route.

Thanks

My vote would be option 2. Hulk is too special of a watch. Discontinued and the Dial is spectacular

#2…. Trade one GMT for another and keep the 116610LV.

Like others, I would try to keep the Hulk if at all possible.

I'd keep the hulk. It's discontinued and won't be as easy to replace as the BLRO if you wanted it back. Also, you're getting a GMT so trading the BLRO makes a bit more sense to me.
The other consideration is that you may not want to wear the RG GMT but still want to wear a Rolex and retaining the hulk gives you that option.
Good luck.

I'm a neophyte at this so take my opinion with a grain of salt. With that said, I own a 1675 Pepsi and a Hulk myself. From what I've deduced so far in this hobby, the three things you need are scarcity, desirability and a cool nickname. The Hulk is a keeper.

Thanks all, I think my initial leaning towards option 2 to trade the Pepsi and keep the Hulk is the way to go as I while I do love my Pepsi I do have a soft spot for the Hulk, took it away with me on holidays recently and it really is a great all rounder.

I was fortunate to get the Pepsi at retail a few years back so using the current “equity” in that watch to get into a precious metal at under retail kinda makes sense (assuming I can strike a decent deal with a local grey dealer).

My thoughts below, you do you:

Option 1: No.
Option 2: Not in a million years.
Option 3: Never ever.

The CHNR is a beautiful watch and a clever amalgamation of colours and lustres, but it ain't no LV or BLRO. I'd never part with those two.

Option 4: buy you a day date.

PM GMT on beach vacations is a no bueno. Sub is discontinued, and you don’t have a dressy PM watch.

Rootbeer is better in TT. If you want full gold go for a DD or Daytona in my opinion. Also agree with most here never sell a Hulk

If you have to put cash towards option #3 I dread to think how much is being put towards the trade for the other two options. So based off that I’d be keeping what you already have

I will keep the 116610LV & BLRO but if you need to I’ll do option 2.

DD is a lovely piece and I tried on the RG olive green dial in my local AD last year and really liked it, not sure how much wrist time it would get though given I mainly wear sports models. Certainly wouldn’t say no to one if the right opportunity arose.

I wouldn’t give up either the LV or the BLRO for that watch.

If you want a full PM watch and don’t want to straight add, look to add a DD or full PM Daytona by moving the IWC and Panerai, and/or maybe the AP.

In these type situations, I like to take a minute and think about the roles each of the resulting losing- and gaining- watches play in not only the collection, but your overall lifestyle...and then if the bang for the buck is there to justify it.

In this case, I wouldn't do option 1 unless I absolutely hated the Lvc, and was definitely done with it, never to wear again. Option 2 might make more sense on paper, but there's more to it than what's on paper.

Option 3 is a total no go. Money-wise, I think it's an all-around loser-without even knowing how much cash you'd have to part with. But that's not the worst part. You're trading the versatility and wearability of two highly coveted sports models for one PM piece, which, while a real beauty, I don't feel gives you the bang for the buck. (IMO)

A side note. As you are treating yourself to a PM watch on a milestone birthday, then treat yourself. Don't try to mitigate the damage (lol)...that just never works out the way you think it will. Good luck,

I would get rid of other makes of watches and keep the Rolex watches you have, if it was possible.

On one hand, maybe you could get a new BLRO at retail at a later date, you'll definitely never get the Hulk at retail (or new, for that matter). On the other hand, ask yourself which watch would you want to keep and wear. If you would enjoy wearing BLRO way more then the Hulk, then sell the Hulk. If you would enjoy wearing the Hulk more, sell the BLRO. If you'd not really enjoy wearing either, sell both.

If you get rid of either, you'll likely end up missing it. I'd think very long and hard prior to committing to such a trade, especially with PM Rolexes becoming harder to sell if you change your mind, and with secondary prices seeming to still potentially be declining further.

That being said, I wouldn't trade BOTH of your watches for it. But if I were in your position and had to trade one, I'd trade the Hulk. It would be somewhat hard to justify having two GMTs if downsizing, but the Pepsi is just so special that I bet you'd fine yourself longing for it more than you would the hulk.

I prefer the two you already have.
Adding would be my suggestion also. It is for your 50th, so treat yourself.

If its not in the cards to pony up cash for a straight out purchase, then get rid of one GMT to acquire the other GMT. Have you tried the CHNR? I tried one on, very pretty, but for whatever reason, the watch did not pop to me. You better try one on first.

I would keep what you have and add a TT Root Beer. The money on these is reasonable in the secondary market and it will give you a chance to try and enjoy the watch. It will also not require you to get rid of a watch to get a watch and you can live with them for a while and see if it would be worth the extra cash or watches to go full PM. Best of both worlds for me. Good luck and let us know what you decide.
