Anyone using a deployment clasp on their Lang?

Finally picked up a Lang Datograph and been considering adding a deployment clasp. Wanted to see thoughts from any owners who have, or have had one. In the past have always preferred the ease of clasps vs a traditional strap.

I don’t own a Lange, but all of my leather strap watches - Omega, IWC, Moser, VC, Cartier, Panerai - have a deployant clasp. It is a must have for me.

I was set on buying one for my Lange 1 Time Zone, but once I saw one and tried it on at the ALS boutique I changed my mind. It was too thick for my preference, also would have required a custom cut strap as no matter how short one side is, the deployant will be be lop sided and asymmetrical to the watch, making it uncomfortable. Given the high cost , it didn’t meet my expectations and preferred sticking to the pin buckle.

My personal experience of course!

I am actually the exact opposite. I am not a fan of deployant clasps. I find them far less comfortable than traditional pin buckles. So if given a choice I would opt to not have a deployant. I can also tell you as someone who owned both a Dato and Double Split, it did not help with the balance or lack of balance of those timepieces for me.

Congrats on your recent addition. I have both a Dato and ZW and I’m partial to pin buckle straps. Granted it’s a matter of personal preference.

I have deployants for all of my Langes (like you i like the ease and security of deployants. But I echo the points above. If you are looking at the single fold deployant, if you have a smaller wrist then the positioning of the deployant can be uncomfortable over time as it will ride up the side of your wrist, even if you go for the OE short strap. I have smaller wrists and did not go the custom route, if you did you can probably get it better positioned. I only really notice if i'm wearing a heavier platinum model.

In short:
pros: lower risk of dropping it, less wear and tear on the strap, if you went platinum, then it helps balance the weight of the watch.

cons: cost, potential comfort, can get in the way if you want to look at the movement.


Lange also has a double fold butterfly deployant that can alleviate some of the comfort issues, but i prefer the heft of the single fold.

I have several Lange watches and honestly I agree that it helps with reducing the risk of dropping it but the deployment buckles are not comfortable on my wrist. I do have a narrow wrist and I know several others that have told me the same. I have the triple split on a tang buckle and it balances well. My datograph up down and Rattrapante Perpetual are on deployment straps and have considered changing them for a tang buckle. In fact, I did buy a tang for the datograph but have not changed it out yet. So in general I much prefer a buckle.

Helpful and Timely Thread..

I have preferred Deployants on almost all other watches. I just bought an 1815 Walter Lange Homage, and felt the the weight of the deployant might be helpful. I had just called some boutiques to potentially order. I am now going to hold off until I can try. And maybe, I just need to go non Lange on this.

I even changed my (old) platinum 5170p to tang !

It's deployant, French for unfolding style, deployment is what the marines do.


Personally, I like this style of clasp, either on the strap or bracelet. For a strap it keeps them from shredding as a tang buckle does, and the bracelet is simply more secure. Go for it either way.

I bought a deployant clasp for my Saxonia Moon. but, eventually switched back to pin buckle because the clasp rides up to side of the wrist, makingit a bit uncomfortable.

Eventually I’ll get a new set of straps with the buckle side much shorter, because I like the ease and security of a clasp. I almost dropped the watch when when it was pin buckle, prompting me to get the clasp in the first place. …If you’ve experienced the adrenaline and terror of seeing the watch falling, you know the feeling of relief when you catch it in time.

The deployant is hit or miss depending on your arm shape and size. The issue is the lever arm. If you have an oval type wrist, then the angle at which the lever arm is positioned is crucial. If it is hitting the "corner" of your oval, then it's extremely uncomfortable, and can even distort the shape of the strap as it's forced to be an an unnatural angle. The only remedy is to shift your whole watch over, but then it won't be centered on your arm.

I suppose you can get a custom strap with the clasp end of the trap being very short, but that's kind of a pain.

Even if the deployant rests in the right place, right beneath the middle of your wrist, depending on the curvature of the lever arm, it can also be quite uncomfortable.

A pin buckle is the most versatile choice for me. However, if you are spending that kind of money on a watch (assuming a brand new Datograph), and you want to spend the thousands more for a Lange deployant, I think a custom strap is probably within your means as well.

Custom short strap for a thin wrist is the way to go, to center the curve of the deployant on the underside of the wrist:

I always put my Langes on deployants and get straps made to match Patek deployant lengths which is 10mm shorter on the short side and 10mm longer on the long side.

The comfort of a deployant is related to wrist shape so not everyone will manage a good fit.

Had a deployant on an 1815 U/D, and while it was beautiful, it just wasn't comfortable so I went back to a pin. I have a Lange 1, Zeitwerk Date and a Lange 1 QP all three on pins and have had no problems (although there have been a couple of "near drops" that caused my heart to stop.

Close to pulling the trigger on a Datograph so I know I'll be trying to make this deployant vs pin decision all over again.

I have a single deployant on my ZW Date. Contrary to others above, I find it very comfortable on my 7” oval wrist. Very happy I added it.

I like to wear my watches while typing and the most comfy deployant I’ve found so far is the new Delugs one. It’s pretty thin.

I think your first paragraph here must be spot on. I have a small but flat wrist and have never had a deployant be uncomfortable and they're definitely my preference.

Double folds generally work better for me as the lever arms are much shorter and flatter than single fold deployants.
