Wow, the responses here are telling. It's clear and simple: OP, you did the right thing. You and others like you are part of the solution. To those suggesting OP should have taken something he didn't want just to flip it, do you not realize you're part of the problem?

I'm not sure the original poster is still reading this post, but I will share my story. I always wanted a Daytona, white dial. I finally got offered Daytona, but it was a black dial. I bought it anyway because of the Daytona hype. I ended up trading it for a Bluesy Sub within a year. I don't know if that was because it was not a white dial that I originally wanted or because after owning a Daytona I realized it was more about the chase and hype, than the watch itself. I have never purchased another Daytona since and I currently own a few Submariner models. This Daytona is from circa 2018 +/-. I would not feel bad about passing on something you didn't want. You hopefully gave someone else the opportunity to purchase the black dial Daytona that they really wanted.

No update still. Starting to regret not getting the black, but they're still within a year timeframe.
Hearing more and more about my AD, my hopes are getting lower, but would love to be surprised.
If I don't have the white by March or so, I'm seriously considering asking for the black again since I'm seemingly only worthy of the black.

Ah man, there's still time!

Just curious--what are you hearing about your AD that's lowering your hopes?

Just haven't really hard anything in a bit, so that's making me a little less optimistic. I don't want to pester them, but once I'm getting right up on that 1 year mark, I will start pushing a lot harder.

How often have you been reaching out? I think once a month is more than reasonable, if you haven’t been doing that already.

I don't sell newly purchased watches unless a close family member really wants the watch and then I either gift it (dad) or sell it at my cost...one exception was to my boss

However....

I remember when I originally read this post....I thought to myself given how difficult these references are to obtain that the least I would have done is taken the black dial, given it some wrist time and see if I was happy enough not to need the panda....if I still wanted the panda I think in this case I would have broken protocol and flipped it, especially as a part exchange the difference would not have been that great and tried to live with the fact the flip was purely for another watch although I know that's still frowned upon....

I do hope your AD comes through for you eventually

Man …

If this were a movie, you’d be sipping champagne with your new white dial Daytona at the AD while the mean TRF bullies who chastised you fall on hard times are forced to sell their collection to the guy who slept with their wife.

I’m still rooting for you OP, but I was really hoping you would have the call by now.

Don’t think it’s a mistake at all. You’re waiting for the piece you want, can’t see how you can disagree with that being the correct move

I’m sure they’ll get you the white dial soon… we all know how these things work by now! If you have the relationship, you’ll get one. If you don’t, well then you wouldn’t have got one anyway, no matter how long you wait. And you clearly have enough of a relationship with them

I think it was a mistake to pass on that Daytona, that said I hope that I am wrong and you get the call that you are waiting for. Time will tell.

You'd think that I quit my job to go sell ice in Antartica they way a lot of you have hyped up apparently the biggest mistake of my entire life--not deciding to buy a watch when a sales associate told me to hold out for what I really wanted.

This thread sucks the joy out of watches for me, as does the AD process.

Its only a mistake if you didn't buy something that was offered to you that you wanted...
Seems like you didn't want it so you made the right decision (for you).
Obviously other who want the watch or love the watch will tell you it was a mistake, but they are not you, only you know what you want.
So bro, just wait for what you want.

I can think of 3 really big spenders locally that were waiting years for a white Daytona, two were offered black Daytonas and one a gold one. One that turned down the black never got a Daytona offer again and is now a bit sour two years later. The other two took the offer of a gold and stainless. Now enjoying the watch. I don’t him, anyone is trying to ruin your day but, they are just sharing their perspective from their own challenges.
Post it on the internet and get free opinions! That’s just the way it works.

Very big mistake. There is no promise of tomorrow, or you’ll ever get the call. If your AD quits or gets fired then your hopes are gone.

Not a very big mistake. It’s just a watch. Don’t let it cause so much anxiety. It’s supposed to be enjoyable. Yes, life is short and should be enjoyed. So why worry so much over a watch you didn’t want? Or a watch at all?

I'm onside with the OP. Why buy what you don't want or settle for 2nd or 3rd option? I've passed on AD offered watches and eventually got offered one at the top of my list. I'll consider other additions down the road but for now, I'm 100% happy with the purchase I made. If I'd bought the ones offered, I have a strong feeling I'd be suffering buyer's remorse. I'm interested in Rolex watches and the idea of flipping for cash isn't part of my interest.

OP you did the right thing.

I also declined the black Daytona because I prefer the white dial. I did this as soon as the 126s were delivered. I received the white one at the very beginning of December 2023, so only a few days after being offered the black one. I suppose it was part of the same batch.

The AD told me they appreciated even more that I made it clear what watch really sang to me.

Other friends did the contrary with the 126s (wanted black dial but were offered the white one.) All of them declined and received the black one. That’s eight persons, if that helps with the statistics.

And by the way, the AD offered me the black dial in April and I declined again.

Right, glad it worked out. OP was offered the black dial in Feb of this year, and still doesn’t have the white dial as of today or yesterday. Presumably, this AD already has gotten in a white dial and could have offered. Now, who knows what will happen. I think the SA will help him out but as time goes on, the status of being a good customer goes down unless you keep the relationship or purchasing up.

I do not know the AD the OP refers to, so I cannot comment.

What I know for a fact is that your conclusion only works in case one is a « valuable customer » to the AD only because one spends huge amounts of money. Based on my experience, there are other categories of « valuable customers », and they get the desired watches often even before the category of persons you are referring to.
