Are we saying therefore that there should be no premium for Mk1 red sub over a Mk4 or a patent-pending DRSD over a regular one? I'm not sure the world agrees.

The flat 4 and associated dial are indicators of a Mk1.

You’re comparing true vintage Rolexes to a relatively modern Sub. I think they’re two different worlds. There are dealers who make the same argument with the modern SD43, which had a slightly different dial when released in 2017.

I’m all about what makes a visual impression on the wrist, not tiny details. So for a red Sub, I’d much rather have an MK2 tropical version because of the visual beauty of the dial. It’s worth a premium, unlike an MK1, IMHO. And as always, the overall condition would be much more important, regardless of which version.
