Hypothetical - new square Rolex

Following Patek's Cubitus...

How well do you think a square Rolex would be received if announced as a new release? Say, steel, oyster and jubilee, along the lines of a Date Just or Day-Date (Square Date? lol).

Rolex has done a rectangular watch with the Prince. Certainly looks better than a square.

I’d be okay with a rectangular watch. I always liked the Cellini Prince.

I think with Rolex's reputation for classic and timeless designs, a square case would be quite a departure from their traditional round styles.

Would be surprised if rolex did that. Rolex doesnt seem like the type to dilute their lineup so I want to say no that won't happen, at least anytime soon.

Rolex did even an octagonal watch: the Cellini King Midas 4370. Certainly an acquired taste...

I would say the King Midas was originally pentagonal and later hexagonal.






The 4370 had a hexagonal cased Rolex with an octagonal bezel - very rare to find those nowadays.



But there was a vintage octagonal cased Rolex back in the 1920's.



The 1908 lineup could be a good platform for exploring square and/or rectagonal cases.

Or perhaps Tudor to test the waters at a lower price point.

I don't think the cubitus looks as bad as the internet is making it out to be, maybe it could have been a bit smaller? I'm also not a particular fan of the nautilus.

Yes, love the older Gulf Monaco version. There's also Bell&Ross and.... etc etc.

Oh, there's also this. A true sports timepiece ⌚, take it SCUBA diving with PADI.

Really need to see it in person, the curves and shapes... visit your nearest H. Moser AD, but these are rare, very rare.

Many thanks to Peter, Paul and Steven for the beautiful pics. I remember many photos of gem set king midas'. I'm not sure though if some of them were smaller so called queen midas'. Diamonds, emeralds, rubies, sapphires. Rolex did it all I think.

For today's standards these square, hexagonal or octagonal watches are pretty small. I don't know if a 36 to 40 mill square watch could please aesthetically or be just - well - square.

As others have said, Rolex has made rectangular cases in the past. The question though does point out that overall Rolex has a pretty unibiquitous case design across the professional models. The Oystercase may change in proportions and size, but Rolex doesn't really offer much variation in this department. Other brands seem to have more case shape variation among their lines (JLC being a notable standout).

I don't think Rolex would really benefit from offering a new rectangular case (unless it was a dress watch which they have done). The Cartier Santos has been hot recently which I think has increased the popularity for similar designs. Diehard Rolex fans are purists.
