Agreed. I wanted a 16610LV for years. Then I tried one on. The 1166 couldn't come fast enough for me.

I’m my late 50’s, and my tastes are broadening. Huge steel sports fan, but recently acquired a PM Sub. Before the purchase, I was concerned about it being a bit too flashy, but as I get older, my concerns of what others think respectfully diminish.

I don’t think it’s an age thing. I can’t wear 36. I have 195mm wrists when cold. Bigger if it’s warm out. So to be honest, size of the watch isnt more preference than it is wrist size. A 36 on my 8” plus wrists look ridiculous. As for precious metals and two tone, well that’s a personal choice and I would say that most folks starting out with the Rolex (or AP/Patek et al) are hard pressed to spend the bucks so opt for stainless models. Again I don’t think it’s age related per se but financially motivated more than anything.

But hey, that’s the beauty of enjoying great mechanical watches. It’s all personal preference. And sure that changes with experiences and finances.

Is this an age thing?

I subscribe to a similar thinking but for me, it would be Daytona, GMT and DD (36).

I’m definitely in the part of my journey where I don’t need as many watches as I thought I used to.

I think it's pretty common to start appreciating different styles and sizes as we get older.

Except for number 1, I’m with you.
At 6’4” 250lbs, 36mm is just too small for me.

A difficult question to answer.

As an older collector, I appreciate larger watches for their legibility. To me smaller watches no longer look normal on my wrist. I don't believe the choice for smaller watches is tied to age. As a matter of fact, it's become a fashion statement. I normally see younger owners choosing the smaller watches, these days. I think the pricing is cheaper for smaller watches as well. This might have something to do with the attractiveness for some.

I find it amusing that people in their 40s think they’re getting old. Lol

I agree with those of you that say age isn’t a factor. Many younger folks like smaller watches. Many older folks like larger watches.

I’ve been buying Rolex watches for forty years so you can see I’m a “seasoned veteran.” I started with two 36mm Datejusts, the second one was tutone. By the early 90’s I bought my first 40mm watch, a tutone Breitling Chronomat.
Since then most of my watches have hovered between 40-43mm with a couple of 47mm Panerai thrown in. And other than the first two no more tutone or PM watches. I considered an impulse buy of a 36mm DayDate on strap around 2020 but ultimately PM watches just don’t fit my lifestyle.

I think it's more like getting oldER not old but yeah it's all relative. :)

Same with wrist sizes I feel. I can how 36mm feels small if you have bigger wrists and honestly I'm still getting used to 36mm since I was wearing mostly 40mm or 42mm.

I can only speak for myself but as i age.....im 68 now i care about material things less and less......Rolex, cars, etc.
I have 3 (rolex) and may give away or sell 2 and keep just one.
Other things are more important to me now.

Tastes change over time, but I'm right there with you for 1. and 2...

To me, the current ceramic Rolex era could be best described as shiny, loud, big, and in your face. Obviously that appeals to likely the majority of wearers, but it's a stark difference from the Rolex of 4-and-5 digit era.

I appreciate the modern bracelets, power reserves, and overall build quality of current Rolex, but not a huge fan of the current sentiment toward Rolex. I'm happy with my 36mm Explorer. It reminds me of old Rolex.

I think your taste has just evolved. For me, I’ve always liked two tone, and 36 mm is my sweet spot, size wise. Even my OP choice was the one with gold hands and accents. My next Rolex will be a SS sports model, for some diversity.

Wore my red letter Sub 1680 today that has been in the safe for many, many months. Somewhat surprised and definitely pleased that it was so comfortable. Quite different from my most recently acquired Sub no date 124060. Vintage s/s for the win!

For me, my taste gravitated towards simplicity. I used to own plethora of chronos (even for divers) years back. Then with aging eyesight, I moved away from busy dials towards 3 handers.

I like to look at my wrist and tell the time at a glance without having to squint to read a busy dial. Also love the cyclops on my sub. I know a lot of people dislike the cyclops but for me, it works beautifully in reading the date.

I don’t agree. Most people buy them by choice. I just bought my first TT from the AD and it perfectly gets in the rotation with my Pepsi and Starbucks. I also have a SS Panda incoming
