I’m off to Kenya soon for a two week Safari and have been thinking about which watch to take for a dusty, bumpy, off road trip. My obvious choice would be my 39mm Explorer, tough, understated, basically made for the job. What watches have/would you take on Safari?

I have an Explorer II and a Tudor Pelagos that are both great vacation watches. I have worn my Pelagos on more adventures and beach trips than any other. Great watch.

I take my tuna for vacations (on isofrane rubber). Super accurate, day date function, lume lasts all night long unlike my sub and if I get robbed, I can easily replace it (but its getting harder to source Tunas now since its discontinued).

I´d take my G-Shock 5610U. Solar powered, so no battery worries. It´s radio-controlled, but I´m not sure I´d get the signal in Kenya. But it´s incredibly accurate without. And far more durable than any mechanical watch, imo! Enjoy Kenya, a beautiful country!

Recently lived in the Horn for a couple of years. If you're concerned about safety, you don't need to be. Your watch will go unnoticed.

If you'll still be concerned then leave any Rolex at home. It's not worth the headspace when you'll be in such an incredible place. Highly recommend Maasai Mara reserve and Lake Nakuru.

Literally any watch will suffice while sitting in the back seat of a plush Land Rover on a paid tour of a foreign land. But I'd go with the Explorer :)

Thanks, I’ve visited the area many times for business and I’m not too concerned about security. We are going to thr Maasai Mara and Lake Naivasha.

I’d take my Seamaster or Submariner if I were taking a luxury watch. I get they’re both divers, but I don’t have a field watch, and I’m not sure why an explorer would be any better than either of those anyway.

But reality is that I’d probably take my most rugged, most durable watch that I have.

Fully agree. I mostly live in Kenya, and I can assure you I feel super comfortable and free wearing watches here (eg, a Daytona or a Snoopy) that I’d be quite anxious wearing in, say, London, Paris, or Johannesburg.

Most Kenyans will simply greet you with a smile looking at your face rather than glancing at your wrist.
