First Panerai: 005 vs 111
Looking to get my first. I know some of the key differences (sandwich dial, open caseback). Wondering if anyone has any input/opinions on the 005 vs 111

Both are stunning pieces and a lot of Panerai DNA.
The choice would be painted dial and logo or sandwich dial and no logo |

Both great watches. Like others said, mostly the dial. The hot model is the G series 111 because it has decorated movement and a painted dial. Only made one year. Find a full set from a solid source.

The 111 is what got me started with Panerai. I love it. That thing really took the abuse like a champ!

111, like most of yall. I just prefer sandwich dials. Might I also be the jerk that suggest something you didnt ask about... but I LOVE the 127. Too big for my wrist, but I love the look with that huge dome.

This was my first nice watch purchase 15+ years ago, a 000. I considered a 005 but landed on a simple dial, which set the tone for my future collecting. My next watch was a no date submariner 14060. You can’t go wrong. Buy what you like. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

My 111 was the first Panerai I ever bought. Put it on once and thought it was too big. It went into my box for about 3 years. Decided I wanted to try it again and had a custom ammo pouch strap made for it and fell in love. I wear it more than anything else now.

The 111 was also my first Panerai (of three). When I first got to TRF there was a lot of Panerai (and big watch in general) bashing over on the Rolex side which I internalized and consequently I dismissed them as too large for my 6.75” wrist. A few years ago a Rolex AD had a naked 111 in the case, I tried it on and the angels sang. Bought a 510 and a 564 not too long after that. I’ve sold about half of my watches over the last couple of years but never once considered selling any PAMs. In fact I have a short list of a few others I am actively seeking. As others have said buy pre-owned, buy classic and buy right and you’ll never have to worry about resale.

Interesting question. Over the last 20 years I have been thru 25 or so Panerai. Still have 4. The Luminor Marina case is the perfect first Panerai. Both great options. I have 2 sandwich dials and 2 painted dials. The 111 is an excellent choice with lots of DNA. In addition to the sandwich dial you also get an exposition back, which I liked even though the movement is not super decorated. The 005 is also a classic that will always be timeless. Go with whatever is the best full set, excellent condition under $4500 you can find from a trusted seller or retailer. Buy the seller! Good luck, enjoy the hunt.

First Panerai: 005 vs 111
111 was my first. Sandwich dial, Marina case. That’s the brand DNA for me.

Sign me up on list for "111 was my first PAM"
Sandwich dial and display caseback were for "PAM thing" for me. And having the running second was a must for me back then. Many PAMs later, I have a 000 and never looked back. I ended up with "keeping it simple", and I like the lume being more even at different angle. I have other watches with running second and display caseback to get my fix there. The 000 dial is also more toolish for me which match with the straps I like. But between 005 and 111, see which indices you like more and go with that. I would lean towards 005 based on what I like now.
