The submariner

The Submariner (Date) is always a good choice, especially for the first Rolex.

The one you want to own and wear that's the only opinion that matters,subs are great classic Rolex watches.

Welcome. I would recommend a SS Submariner, I prefer the ND version for the balance of the dial. A good one and done or it could be the cornerstone of a larger collection.

You've answered your own question. Lots of Submariners and Submariner Dates to choose from. The one you should buy is the one you like best.

My first Rolex was a DateJust, and I am sure that this was the same for quite a few other people.

I had a Dive Watch with and Omega Seamaster and also had a Speedmaster so adding the DJ was a logical step.

But, it is going to be your watch, so go to your AD and sit-down and try on as many different watches as you can, see what style and size works for you, it has to be what you want not what others suggest.

I have added a Submariner and a TT Sea Dweller over the years but the DJ gets the most wear.

Submariner has one downfall: the back case is too thick so it floats on your wrist/ the bezel is thinner and the case is thinner than the GMT master. So in effet it’s a beautiful watch. Until you wear it and it becomes a UFO.

You should start by visiting a Rolex AD (Authorized Dealer) and see what's available. You will find out demand is very high and you have a wait before you will be able to purchase a Rolex watch. The AD should have exhibition models you can try on and decide what you want to wait for. Your wait may be shorter if you purchase jewelry or other brands of watches the AD sells.

The Submariner is a classic for a reason and there are many to choose from. Most folks start with a no-date or date model in black. Find an authorized dealer if you can as they usually have "exhibition" (not for sale) models you can try on to see what speaks to you. Alternatively the Explorer is another popular first Rolex and comes in 36mm & 41mm sizes. The fun is in the looking and hunt. Recommend buying from an authorized Rolex Dealer the first time.

The bubble back caseback thing is over exaggerated. It makes very little difference in the real world.

OP - a two tone - 116613lb would be a fantastic statement piece or go stainless steel if you prefer a more understated look. The two tone blue is LOUD but so nice looking imo.

I know both you and the other fellow mentioned this like it’s some common issue, and I don’t believe I’ve ever heard that before.

I’ve owned two subs, one modern ceramic and an older 5513 and I’ve never, ever thought about that.

Yes, Welcome to TRF can’t go wrong with a Sub any! Make a visit to your AD and try some different styles and see what works best for you. If you go with a recommendation it may not work for you later. Buy what you love and will enjoy for a long time.

Maybe its the shape of your wrist that's the problem, my Submariner fits nicely on my wrist, no issues at all, even its big brother sits well on my wrist.

The shape and size of our wrists determines what works and what doesn't, I can wear most watches easily irrespective of size even though I have quite small wrists, my watches seem to slip nicely above the wrist joint. But I can appreciate that if you have a broad flat wrist some watches will sit very proud of the wrist.

I own the GMT BLNR and also the SUB 41 124060. The slightly larger caseback isnt noticeable really bc the caseback "height" disappears a little as it imprints a bit into you skin. The case still feels thinner on the sub41 on the wrist. I absolutely love how the Sub41 sits on the wrist.. maybe slightly over the GMT. Both wear similar.

Definitely occurs with the sub and not my GMT. And indeed flat and broad!

Don't agree.

I have a 5 digit Sub Date and it fits on my wrist flush, with no gap.

If you’re interested in having just one watch you should consider a few things and choose accordingly.

1. What’s your budget
2. What style appeals to your taste
3. What functions are important to you. Water resistance level, timing bezel, maybe GMT?, size for your wrist, easy adjustments to bracelet? Etc….
4. What watch fits as much of your criteria as possible?

Personally for me it WAS a Submariner Date. I was very lucky in 2019 to get one from an AD with no history. I can’t speak highly enough about this watch but it’s still a personal taste.

Only YOU should decide what’s perfect for you! Don’t let trends or the opinions of others drive you. It’s your money!

My first Rolex, from AD, was a Datejust. One year later, I got a Submariner Date. This year a Batgirl. Of all these three, the submariner is worn most often. In fact, if I had to stay with just one, it would definitely be the submariner. Contrary to general opinion, for me it is a more beautiful watch than the Batgirl and can be worn with any outfit.

My first rolex that I still have and love is a 16610. The smaller design fits great for my small wrist compared to the modern 6 digit subs.

If I could turn back time though, I think I would get a no date sub instead. Very clean and simple.

Really hard to go wrong with a Sub. If it was me, I would go for a Sub Date.
