Well I know most on this forum dissagree, but I buy my watches as aan investment. And that is usually the direction I take when people start talking about the value of spending thousands on a watch.

I am more secure holding my savings in Rolexes (and PAM's) as opposed to our crashing dollar that everybody else holds their savings in.

Anything I can purchase, and enjoy for 5 years, then sell for at least what I paid for it is considered a good investment in my eyes...

Some good comments there...

It all depends on what people call an investment really.

If you buy something and it holds it price, makes no profit, but you enjoy it... and even perhaps if it loses a little value.. and you can sell it on.. then that's what I would call a good investment.

As stated earlier... cars are a terrible investment... not all of them... but generally.

They lose money when you drive them off the forecourt in the UK, and you then park them out in the elements to begin depreciating in value.

Wheres you could buy a watch and nurture it, and sell it on.

The Submariner 14060M which I own was new to the original owner in November 2004.

New, this watch is now £3400 in the UK, and I purchased it from him for £2200.

The original papers etc. are in the box, and it was brand new from the Authorised Dealer in 2004 at a price of £1995.

So he had 5 years of enjoyment, and passed it on with a £200 profit.

Good investment all round!!

I had a guy notice my TT blue sub at dinner the other day. Apparently he had owned one but it was stolen during a move.
The guy is a regular at a place I frequent and I never really cared for him, it was nice to have something in common to discuss.

Tale of two timepieces...(three actually)

So I'm standing in line to buy movie tickets with my 8yr old son and of all days, I look to see the man behind me wearing a SS Daytona (white Face). I looked at him in shock and said "Wow, nice Daytona." He smiled when he saw my Sub and the discussion began (you know the deal). Anyway I said it's strange that I've only seen 2 SSD's EVER and that earlier the same day I put money down on a new SSD that was en route to my AD. He had bought his several years ago for $7k when the retail was $5k'ish. I sensed a little disbelief when I told him I had just ordered mine but when he asked the going price these days, I just happened to pull out the receipt I still had with me. It was a win-win. His investment was validated when he saw the current retail and I got to see how awesome an SSD looked out on the town. My son of course was not amused with the conversation until he got Dippin' Dots and a movie with Dad. I guess that makes it a win-win-win.

When I bought my SSD, my AD was talking about what a great investment it was. I looked at Steve and said, "you can stop now. You sold the watch before I ever walked through the door." We laughed for a moment and said, "You know what Steve, there is only one thing more fiscally irresponsible tahn buying a Rolex." "And what's that," he asked. I replied, "buying a second Rolex." Point is, I think most of the people here have a passion for Rolexes. We can talk "investment" all day long. Bottom line, we love our watches. 'Nuf said.
Last thought: Sitting out at a restaurant with my family and my brother, from across the table asks, "hey Todd, what time do you have?" I said, "nine o'clock." He replied, "that's funny, that's what my watch says and I paid ten dollars for mine." ....oh well. Some people just don't get it.
