Does anyone use a Yachtmaster as a timing tool in a sailboat race???

And I mean for the countdown in the starting sequence of a regatta and for determining total elapsed time of the race when you finish?

I have been racing sailboats for most of my life and digital Japanese watches are standard for everyone I know or see. At the yacht club bar one can find a plethora of fine watches; Omega's, Rolex, and Corums. Most common Rolex's found waterfront seem to be Submariner's and Datejust's. In fact, within the Southern California/Newport Beach racing community, I know of only two Yachtmasters and like most everyone in TRF community, I am a major wrist watcher...

16610 Sub
16700 GMT pepsi
16713 GMT-II TT
1601 DJ TT
1500 OD TT
Lot's of Omega's

For that matter, I know of very few people who time car races in Laguna Seca with Daytonas when I used to volunteer, go diving with Submariners, or spelunking with Explorers. Although I've seen quite a bit of GMTs at airports!

I think most people wear our beloved brand because they look good more than anything else.

BTW, nice boat.

I sail small boats just for fun, not the kind of organized competition you're talking about - but consistent with your point, normally I wear my Timex Ironman on the boat, it's a very practical choice with chrono, timer etc. and plus if I lose it in the water, no big deal. . .

Can anyone explain how the YM II actually works? I've never played with one, but it looks complicated.

No. You know how busy a start line can get. I use this when I'm racing (doing foredeck, sighting the line and calling time). Great timer with built in ISAF start sequences and audible countdown alerts

and this when I'm out playing on my boat:

Btw, what is that, an Olson 30?

You win a cookie! :thumbs up: Yeah, its an Andrews 50, actually its 49.99 ft so we can race it in the local Thurs night 'beercan's" where there is a 50 ft limit. Prob the only Grand Prix racer built to the 'beercan rule" but we enjoy the weekly fun all summer long and sharing our hobby with 30 or so of our friends.

In all honestly, Alan Andrews, who is a good friend and races with us often, refers to the boat as a "gentleman's TP 52". Very comfortable for offshore racing yet still under 18,000 lbs displacement.

SO have you seen many Yachtmaster's? I guess my point is that they really are not ever used for sailboat racing. The old model was pretty much useless and the new model has some stopwatch functions but as I said, I have only seen two Yachtmaster's on wrists in the last 5 years and those only came out in the bar after a race.

Maybe they are more common on power boats??
