looking to buy first rolex

I have been looking for a pre owned rolex for a couple of months and can't decide between two. One is a 1986 sub with date, it is in great condition with band refinished. although the glow from the hour markers seemed to be dim. The other is a 1995 sea dweller that has a small chip in the crystal and the band is pretty well scrached up. It also costs $700 more. I know the sea dweller is more unique but it will cost me a few hundred more to get it back to shape. any advice between the two would be greatly apreciated, as I am going to buy one or the other next week.

Take a peek around our For Sale section, there are many great buys.

The two you choose from represent classic Rolex!

You really can't go wrong with either. Although you pointed out that the SD will require a few $ more to get back in cosmetic shape, you really will need to spend on an RSC servicing whichever you choose to buy. A standard service will also include polishing.

I think it all boils down to whether you feel the SD is worth $700 more. I personally had to make this decision a few months back, and found the Sub far more comfortable on my wrist.

Oh yeah, welcome to TRF!

I love the Sub, a classic...IMO the SD is not worth the extra and for me it sits to high on my wrist. No cyclops and I'm too freaking blind to read the date without it...

my advice on any rolex: consider the price of service as well. For rolex it is reasonable, but I always think that I may have to send the watch to RSC for a $600 movement service. Most of these watches have not been extensively serviced, and I have had to do it several times. RSC is great, but you shouldn't ignore the cost of service in a preowned watch. Just my two cents.
