New guy needs advice

Ive been lurking here a while and dreaming of owning a Rolex for even longer. A guy I know from work has a Submariner SS date that he wants to sell. He says it was made in 1999. It does not have box and papers but he said I could have it checked out by a dealer before we go through with the deal.

I am not that concerned about the box because I have no intention of selling the watch. The watch looks to be in very good condition. However, since it is not mine yet I do not have any pics to post. He is asking $3000 and I do not have any idea of the value of this watch.

Assuming I verify its authenticity, any advice on a realistic price range would be appreciated.

Thanks
Tony

$3000 is high with no box and papers. I can buy an F or D ('04-'06) WITH a FULL set for a couple hundred more.

I'd offer no more than ~$22-2500.00.

It may be a difference in other parts of the country.. around here 3,000 is a good price for a 10 year old Sub Date.. There should not be any significant difference in price with or without the old expired warranty paper unless you want to pay extra... Some do insist on charging a hundred extra for it though I would not pay it...

(vintage is different)

I actually just meant reputable sellers on ebay (reputable PERSONAL sellers that is, not the dealers over there). Now that you mention it though, I bought my last F Serial Sub-date on Craigs in Tampa for 3100.00 with the full set (we met a local Rolex specialist for verification and to do the deal of course). That must have been 8 or 9 months ago, and I only knocked him down 100 bucks as it was. Guess it is different out west.

Make sure it is authenticated and know the service history, as a 10 year old Sub will need service if it hasn't had one in the past.

Gosh that seems like alot for one of that age. I find it funny my DJ estimates were noted as high and my Sub estimates as low... No smoke and mirrors or anything though, this is just my personal experience of what I've had pieces presented to me for, or actually purchased them for on a somewhat routine basis.

I could not imagine paying 3800.00 for a 1999 Sub serviced or not, unless it has some "vintage" value which I don't think the '90s ones do yet. Hell I paid 4500 for the last tu-tone blue "F" I JUST sold... again, that was a complete set. Just made a guy a reasonable offer on Craigslist. I guess in fairness I really dig around for my buys.

First time I got to "play" with my mini-photo studio kit with that watch btw...

I paid 3.3. for my 12 year old Sub Date sans service. $500 later gives my sub a grand total of 3.8K all serviced, shined and a one year warranty. I thought I got a fair deal for a 1997 model.

Sorry, my Sub is worth more to me than any TT one. Subs were meant to be SS and black. IMO only.

Yea, I know that seems to be the prevailing thought here (and I feel the same on the GMT side), the TTs are great for resale though.

When you put gold on a watch it ceases to become a tool watch and becomes something you wear to dinner parties And I hate dinner parties.

Honestly they are all a luxury item to -me- and I couldn't imagine ever dunking my multi-thousand dollar sub in water for a prolonged period of time (especially salt water), or banging it around in TOO rough of an environment on purpose. When it comes to modern Rolexes, I don't really see any of them as "tool" watches anymore, I just wear them because I love the way they look, operate and are engineered.

Again, I know I'm in a minority there, but that's just me.

If it all checks out (authenticity-wise), you better grab that 16610 for 3k and run.

At 3K you're getting a great deal - again assuming that everything checks out. But better play it safe and getting it serviced ASAP so that you can wear it for the next six or seven years worry-free.
