Took bracelet of sub off.

Took bracelet of my sub off last night. Good to see the engraving on the watch case.

Question, did ask this before but sis not get much response: I find the four corners of the Sub too sharp for my liking. What do you suggest in terms of methods and tools to round them out a bit and smooth them out? Would most Jewlers be able to do this?

Thanks.

When you say 4 corners, do you mean the bracelet or bezel? Either way, I am sure a jeweler good buff it down to where you like it.

I don't think you want to mess with rounding any parts of your rolex with any tools.

Hmmm - I'm not real sure about rounding those corners off. There should be plenty of clearance between the lugs and your wrist. Are they digging into your wrist, or is more of a cosmetic issue?

I think he's referring to the lugs?

Honestly, pal.....I've owned SEVEN Subs and NEVER had a problem with the lugs. Yes, I do agree that they are pointed and not rounded like those of the YM, but I wouldn't try to use some file on them.

If you notice carefully, the lugs DO NOT make actual contact with your skin on the wrist, but sit up, floating in mid-air so to speak.

Have a close look....I wouldn't do anything to them.

Cheers - JJ

See the lug ends floating in mid-air!!

Appreciate the advice. But, the pointed edges still bug me. So I do want to round them off. Anyone try thsi before or know how to do? (yes, I am refering to the pointed edges of the lugs)

If you must have them rounded, you should do 4 things:
1) Realize that if you try to re-sale and the potential buyer notices, you can kiss that deal goodbye.
2) If you are still OK with #1, take the case to a manual machinist. They can put it on a jig and use a milling machine with a 6-8 flute endmill and put a radius on them.
3) Have them use the buffing wheel on a bench grinder and try to achieve a as built look to the SS.
4) Post a pic when you are done, I would like to see the work.(Used to be a machinist before joining the Navy).

P.S. It may be a good idea to have the movement removed from the case; I have no idea whether the shock of the machining (no matter how slight) will affect the delicate innerds.

Seems like a perfect recipe for NOT doing it!

Along time ago, a friend of mine gave me a jet of Jewler files as he called them, and I used them to file down the pointed ends of the crown guards that on Seiko dive watch that were eating into my wrist. Looked OK. Wonder, if instead of taking to a machinist, is there any type of buffing rag or low grade sand paper that can smooth them out (Yeah, I am probably giving JJ a heart attack by now!!! Just thinks if he drops dead, we can send his TT Blue Sub to the Machinist Diver4USN suggest!!! LOL)

Don't plan on reselling the Sub. But, still do not like the pointed ends. The one thing I do not like about Rolex. Seems Rolex could easily buff out the edges when made, would be a little nice looking and smoother. One thing I do like about my Omega SMP over the Sub, the OMega has a very nice external finish and well smoothed over.

Now where did I put that Dremel tool?

Dremels are for sissies. If you REALLY want to remove those sharp edges, use this:

Okay, gotcha! You could have a competent jeweler do it for ya, I know a guy that did it to his sub to look more like the YM case.

Sorry, but did you notice how smooth and rounded what's left of the lugs are? .

I would NEVER consider modifying a Rolex to beyond what the Toronto RSC does. They come back virtually perfect.

If I had a Rolex that didn't feel right, I'd flog it and find one that did.

I have no idea why someone would even think of doing that to the case...but thats just me. ...forget about resale if you do that, and you never know what may happen to cause you to resell it.

If I didnt like the way it felt, sell it and get one thet felt better.

I do like my sub and the way it fits, just do not like the sharp pointed edges of the lugs-the way they look. It is a great watch! But, I must round off those edges! If I did it, it might even make it more sellable, custom modified Rolex!!! LOL Just like buying a 1911 .45 that has been dehorned!

Who knows, maybe some movie star with a Rolex will do the same thing and it will be the hottest fad.

Well... you could use these metal finishing abrasives (very very fine sand paper, but these don't have residues)

I bought these in Japan and this is my last pack, its not harsh at all and you can buff out scratches on metals. Not sure about filing things down though.

Hey, it’s your watch round them if you wish. Just remember you won’t be able to sell the watch or if you do it will be very difficult.

But it's your watch do what makes you happy.
