Submariner -To buy or not to buy......

First off, Hello! I have been lurking for a while now and now have something "post-worthy"

I have an opportunity to pick up a nice Sub date. I believe it is a 1996 (don't have serial to check yet) and was serviced a little over a year ago by a private jeweler. It has all of the boxes and paperwork. Condition seems very nice for a watch that is 14 years old. Price is at $2500.

I think it is a good price, but how good of a price is it? I love the Subs in all of their flavors but really wanted an Exp II for my first Rolex. Realistically speaking, do I have enough breathing room in this watch for me to make some money if I decide this watch isn't for me?

Regards,
Jamie

That is a very good price for a Sub Date.......

But if you don't really want it...don't buy it.. Let somebody who really wants a Sub have a shot..

Welcome! Take some pics of the watch and post them here! That is a very good price, almost too good to be true IMO.

welcome to TRF, it is a good price for sure, but if you truly want the EXP II then don't just buy the sub for the sake of buying a rolex

Let me put it this way: Contact me if you are not buying it. It sounds like a good deal if it is legit and has a decent service history.

Can't believe folks here are counseling you not to buy a Sub!! I'm guessing many of them also PMed you asking for the dealer's contact info, and observing that you "really want the Explorer-II..."

So...sounds like you really want the Explorer-II...and what was the name of the dealer offering this Sub???

Seriously, that's a very good price on a 16610 of any age, particularly if it's been recently serviced. If you're sure that it's legit (including all genuine Rolex parts--you mentioned a recent service by a "private" watchmaker) then that is a fantastic price. Biggest concern would be the bracelet, which could be in bad shape on a 15-yo watch, and would run you $500-$1000 to replace.

As far as the Sub v. Expy...I would be the first to tell you that if you only want one Rolex, the Explorer-II is a fantastic choice. Very comfortable wearing, versatile, and functional. I wear mine much, much more than my Sub.

But...$4000 to $4500 is a reasonable price to pay for a Sub. You should be able to get an Expy-II for around $2500 to $3000. If you buy this Sub, you should be able to get both for around $5500. And it won't be hard to get your money back out of the Sub if you don't like it.

Again, assuming the watch is legit.

Buy the Sub for $2500 (assuming it is legit), sell it for $3500, buy your EXP, pocket the profit.

That's an excellent price - provided everything is kosher. My advice is buy the watch before the seller sobers up and realises he's taking a thousand dollar bath on the price he's selling at. As for the Explorer, it's not going anywhere - make it your second Rolex :)

Update, I know the seller really well and am trying to talk him into selling to someone else for a little more (say $3k). I am not really in a position right now to buy it unless I "have" to... But I went ahead and freed up some money so I can.

Cliff Notes: I don't really want to buy the watch from a friend and "profiteer" from his need to sell

Well... I bought it, I'm still not sure if I want to keep it, sell it or trade it. I will post up some pics later tonight. I really like the Exp II and I have a feeling that is what I will end up with in the end.

Jamie, welcome to TRF!
The submariner is an awesome watch and at that price seems like a great deal.

If Rolex is your thing, you should by-pass the Explore--its looks small and basic to the point of boring. Go for sub.

I am way more of an Omega fan, but I doubt many here would direct you towards the (low resale) Explorer over the ever popular sub.

Right?

Here it is, I need to get another link to wear it though. Also, I have a new respect for all of you that take such sweet pics of your watches. This one really sucks, but hopefully I will have some better lighting this weekend.
