A lot of it is what you are used to. Although I have small wrists, I think I can wear watches over 40mm.

"ONLY DateJusts"?

I'll have that 'dealer' know that for many of us, the DateJust is THE definitive Rolex... Not to take away from the sport models which followed the introduction of the DJ in '45... In many ways, I think the DJ redefined Rolex and launched the 'modern' era that continues to this day...

I bought my first Rolex last week.

I tried the various sizes. I have small wrists and was surprised to find that the 'standard' sizes of 36 mm were a little small, and that the bigger ones (from GMT II to sea Dweller) were actually alright.

I finally bought the GMT II and it looks very good. Two links had to be removed from the bracelet.

The 'intermediate' sizes (34 mm), which I thought would be the best for me, were actually much too small; I was told that many women go for those.

yeah, like i stated before, usually people go for the bigger watch. not because its a fad, but because they just "fit better". whatever.

To me the Rolex Datejust was like Ferrari 308 making Ferrari a household name. The DJ is the watch that put Rolex in mainstream. John you made a comment on 34 MM and the thinner the better, well the 36 MM DJ was perfect in everyway. I was told the 40 MM Sports Rolex were big and clunky in my early Rolex research. I thought the Sub was great but just plain boring. There were really no options for changing the bezel or black dial. I wanted a silver dial or something to get some sort of attention for the money. The SS Datejust is a canvas. You can modify it whichever way you want.

although im a biggish bloke(240 lbs- 6ft)but i have small wrists- i love my dj at 36mm, but when i got the planet ocean at 45mm everyone comented on how well it suited me, i have also tried on panerais and the 44mm suits me so much better then the 40mm, i had a corum bubble(god knows what size that was!) and that suited me too
