Rolex Explorer review

Wow, I was at timezone reading the Explorer review written by Walt Odets, this doesn't look good:

"For the person for whom accuracy of rate in a mechanical watch is the only criterion in buying a watch, and for whom value-for-the-dollar is of little concern, the Explorer might be a choice. In the current watch market, the poor quality of the movement--and relatively good quality of the case and dial--suggests that this watch should retail in the $600 to $800 range. To my tastes, a quartz-controlled watch would provide the functionality of this watch, do it even better, do it with better reliability, do it at an appropriate purchase price, do it at much lower routine maintenance costs, and, in most cases, provide a better piece of craftsmanship in the bargain. Obviously, for the person who wants "a Rolex" for reasons unrelated to the watch itself, this watch might be a choice"

Might be a scientific review otherwise, but that quote is not a "review". That is just a silly rant mode from the reviewer that I cannot take seriously.

For the Explorer!

from what I understand, thats a older model exp. I think the 14270, the newer model from what I hear is much better

is there a review on the new model 114270? I have not seen one, I own one and find it hard to find out some facts about it.

And another question:

How to navigate to that review you gave us a link to (if you do not click the link, that is!).

I ask since I would like to read "Part 1" of the review.

The link address does contain a "library" part, but I cannot find any library on the site (maybe I just didn't look carefully enough).

I've had 3 Explorers in 25 years, best of the lot was my 1986 explorer 2. It was stolen in 1990 & I replaced it in 2003. Comared to the old one the new one felt like a fake!
If accuracy, value & functions are of prime importance I'm sorry to say that a TAG heuer Chronotimer beats any Rolex at £775

That review is about 5yrs out of date, and refers to a movement no longer used in the watch.

So what movement do I have in my 2003 114270 and in what way is it superior to the cal 3000?

Cal 3130.

Anyway that statement that Walt made applies to ALL mechanical watches. Let's not take it too seriously. Afterall, it has never made sense to be to buy a Rolex as well. But to fuel my obsession and love, what else can I do?

Based on his observations, then you can trash the 14060 and AK as well. As an Explorer owner, this article was the cause of some concern to me. My model is a 114270 so I crossed my fingers that his complaints were addressed in the Cal. 3130. As for the Tag... surely you jest

Odets did admit that the Rolex movement is very accurate and consistent.

It's just that the movement finishing is not at par with the other high-end brands. Amount of work vs. price, when compared to other manufacturers.

IMHO, it's a very honest review, from a different point of view. He has different taste, and in the end I can only say "SO WHAT?"

I don't think the point of his article is so much that it doesn't perform, it's more about value. I read it and came away from it thinking I was HORRENDOUSLY overcharged for a mediocre (at best) movement dressed in the Emporer's New Clothes...

Last comment... basically, I discounted and filed this info away soon after I discovered it (years ago). I love my Explorer and judge the whole package, not just the movement.
