SD or 50 Anniversary SS GMTII?

First post. Awesome forum. I am set to purchase my 2nd Rolex, my 1st one a mid-90s GMTII which I have since sold. I was dead set on the SD mainly because of its rugged appeal and clean look, but after reading here about the new anniversary SS GMTII and the handsome pics i'm now undecided between the two. My local AD has the SD on stock and tells me he will have the new GMT in two months. Either is being offered to me at more or less same price of around $4,500.

I'm not sure whether to wait for the GMTII arrival so I can try them both side-by-side and decide which one i'll prefer. Or just get the SD now as i'm itching. Is this anniversary SS GMTII worth the wait? No fit issues with the SD as I have tried it and fits the wrist just fine. Also function of either tool watch is irrelevant to me as i'm neither a diver and although I travel frequently across timezones never found the need to use the timezone feature with my old GMT.

Tough choices....I had a SD and I have the TT GMT II Anniv.

Hands down I think the new GMT is amazing......

However you should try them on side by side and see which one "smiles back" at you. You will know then what your choice will be.

The GMT is a much more versatile time piece than the SD, unless you deep dive routinely.

Having said that, purchasing a Rolex is generally an emotional issue rather than a technical one.

I have the SD, I would have to look at the new GMT II to make my decision. I also have the "old" GMT II 16710 Z series, and yes, the GMT is more versatile since it has the 2 time zones, the SD is a rugged watch that in my opinion, from bracelet link thickness to crystal to case is a Bradley fighting vehicle of a watch with a high end exterior polish and shine not normally seen on such a beast....

You need to see them both side by side. Take your time, go home after looking, think about it and come back to buy the one you couldn't stop thinking about....

Get the GMT at that price!!! Then flip it and with the money made, buy another GMT. GMT all the way. You won't be dissapointed.

I think he has misinformed you about the price of the GMT. That is the kind of discount that could get him in trouble with Rolex, especially with that new watch. Why on earth would he sell it for that kind of discount? Does not make sense.

Seriously, I wasn't too impressed with photos of the GMT, but having tried on the TT GMT, whoa. It feels completely different, and I'm definitely looking at getting one when the circumstances are right.

2nd that, I would try both of them at the AD and buy what fits you the best and looks the best on you. Personally, I like the shiny SS Anv. GMTII.

If the price is the same for both SD and GMT II anniversary, I'd go with the GMT II anniversary.

Welcome to TRF. That price on the SS GMT-II looks too good to be true.

If, however, that is the take away price, then I'd wait for it.

As most have said, it's a matter of fit and personal preference.
Personally, I find the SD to be a bit heavy, large and uncomfortable. I have pretty large wrists but it still consistently feels "high-centered." I can't say much for the fit of the anniv. SS GMT-II, but I have tried on the 18K version and that watch felt very solid and comfortable. Still probably a bit large for my taste, but definitely wearable all day, every day.
I'd definitely go back to your AD and make sure the pricing on that anniv GMT-II...that's more like CURRENT GMT-II discounted pricing.

Thanks guys. I guess the AD could be wrong with the GMTII price. In that case it removes the GMT as a choice since i'm only willing to spend $4.5T at the moment. That makes the SD an easy pick. The AD is in Jakarta, Indonesia where I am based at the moment and Rolexes in this neck of the woods do not sell very easily so the price could be true.

If the AD confirms the pricing I am inclined to follow most of your suggestion to wait for the GMT's arrival before I decide.

I have both an SD and GMT II. It would be nice, isn't it if you can buy both? Many moons ago, I sold my first GMT, I had kicked myself on the butt since. Naturally, when I bought back to Rolex, my first choice was the GMT II. Based on the raving reviews I have had read, I bought the SD next--without the "Mrs." knowing.

The SD from my experience is a substantial watch--heavy and tall on the wrist. While the GMT II master is lighter and sits nicely on the wrist. I get more compliments wearing it, due perhaps to its black and red bezel. IMHO, the SD is a (more) beautiful watch than the GMT II.

If you ONLY have to buy one, my advice is to get the SD.

Well you guys were right on the new GMT pricing error. Apparently my AD has no idea on the MSRP yet and just assumed it will more or less be the same price as the current GMTII. As a reference I asked him the discounted price of the anniversary green Sub and he gave me $6T. So correct me if i'm wrong the new SS GMTII will probably fall in that same price range.

Great pics roadcarver, before I fall for the SD could you tell me if that elevated saphire glass is not prone to bumping and scratching. It seems so high-set and vulnerable. I'm going to use this as an everyday watch so this thing must be solid.

I've had this watch since Jan of this year and have had no jarring of the crystal. I bought this SD pre-loved and the person that wore it really made use of the watch, and the crystal is still mint.
