how do you tell if it is galling or thread splitting??

In a private message another member mentioned to me about thread splitting.

The way thread splitting was explained to me is that the case back thread actually splits at the crest of the thread causing it to burr the mid case inner threads, locking the case back from going further on or reversing off while in the process of either removing the case back or screwing it down. Therefore, it can happen at any position while screwing the back on or when taking the back off. Scary!!!

I would imagine that this phenomena is different from galling but with the same results. Is there any way to tell if it is one or the other?? Has anyone ever had this experience?? Thanks in advance for any feedback

From what I understand, galling is a made when one or both materials are soft and you mesh them when forcing the threads and it's harder to back out, while thread splitting is creating a new thread path easier to repair. Either one sucks.

What happens in galling is the outer most part of the thread heats up and and splits causing the opposite thread to basically weld itself to the thread. It happens quite fast when it does so stop immediately and if possible get some oil under the case back and let it soak and hopefully it will unscrew. Rikki
